KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Despite recording 36 runs and 51 hits in the 4-game series, Oregon Tech was unable to stop a potent British Columbia lineup, as the T-Birds completed a series sweep of the Hustlin’ Owls at Steen Sports Park.
UBC (33-12, 27-6 CCC) held on for a 16-12 victory in yesterday’s suspended Game 2, before sweeping Tech in today’s regularly schedule doubleheader with 11-8 and 15-5 wins.
Logan Macy ran his hit streak to 24 games with an RBI single in Game 1 and a double in Game 2 – with his streak second only to Patrick Barry’s 37-game effort last season in program history.
Dylan Edwards added three multi-hit games with five RBI for the Owls (22-24, 14-19).
In the suspended game, the two teams squandered leads – before a strange ninth inning changed the outcome.
UBC led 7-0 in the fourth inning, as David Krahn knocked in a pair in the first and Calvin Warrillow hit a long 2-run homer in the fourth to build the big lead. OIT answered with an 8-run fourth, with Aiden Corkery starting the rally with a 2-run single and Edwards giving the Owls the lead with a 2-run single to left.
Tech would extend the margin to 12-9 in the sixth after back-to-back RBI singles from Corkery and Nik Halouchits, but Warrillow cut the deficit to 12-11 with a seventh inning 2-run shot.
Clinging to the one-run lead, play began in the ninth as darkness fell in the Basin. A seeing-eye single from Warrillow was followed by a 2-run homer from Kellen Bourne to give the T-Birds the lead. Four batters later, Krahn lifted a routine pop up into left that no fielder could find, dropping for a 2-run double to make it 16-12 – with the game finally halted due to darkness.
After 13 hours, play resumed this morning, with the game ending after 18 minutes of play.
Five Tech players – Corkery, Halouchits, Edwards, Nick Gimino and Logan Pontecorvo – had two hits. Warrillow was 5-for-6 for UBC and Krahn drove in four, with Owen McConnell striking out 6-straight batters at one point to claim the win in relief.
Today’s originally scheduled first game saw UBC capitalize on six OIT errors, turning the miscues into six unearned runs. Krahn hit a solo homer in the third inning to give the visitors a 4-0 lead, before the Owls offense battled back – as a Gimino bad-hop 2-run single cutting the deficit to 5-4. The T-Birds countered with a 4-run sixth, as Kyle Yip lined a key 2-run double, extending the margin to 9-4.
OIT took advantage of wildness in the eighth – scoring two runs on bases loaded walks, another on a hit-by-pitch and a fourth on a passed ball – but couldn’t plate the tying run, as Lucas Hyunh got consecutive strikeouts to end the threat, getting the final five outs for his sixth save.
Both Yip and Krahn had three hits for UBC, with Andrew Sharp going 3-for-4 for Tech. T-Bird pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts in the win.
UBC controlled the series finale after an eventful first inning. Josh Cote hit a 2-run homer to give the T-Birds a 3-0 lead, but the Owls strung together five hits in the bottom half, including a 2-run single from Edwards to tie the game.
Braedan Scott provided a big 2-run single in a 4-run third that gave the visitors the lead for good, with a 5-run sixth inning breaking the game wide open.
Landon Cheney had two hits, including an RBI double, Edwards had two hits, including a solo homer and Jojo Roman added two singles in the loss.
The Owls close out the regular season next weekend, hosting College of Idaho in a 4-game series.
