Henley 41, North Bend 28

Henley has been rolling through opponents like prime Mike Tyson for much of this season, but the Hornets met their James Tillis Friday.

North Bend (7-3, 3-3) trailed 14-0 after the first quarter but scored two touchdowns in two minutes to tie the game early in the second. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that Henley (9-0, 6-0) was able to get back out to a two-touchdown lead, and even after that they had to weather one final push from the Bulldogs.

“I’m really proud of the guys for how they handled the adversity in tonight’s game,” Henley head coach Alex Stork said. “There were adverse situations last week against Mazama, and I felt like that experience really helped us tonight to persevere in the end of the game.”

The Hornets scored on their first two drives, first with a 12-yard run by Logan Whitlock, then with a short pass turned 60-yard touchdown for Luke Bennett. North Bend responded with an 80-yard scoring drive capped off by a 21-yard touchdown pass from Cole Hansen to Daniel Jorge.

On the third play of Henley’s next possession, Joe Janney threw a pass that bounced off a receiver’s hands and into the arms of Manako Morris, who returned it 40 yards to the Hornets 8-yard line. Two plays later, Hansen picked up a low snap and threw a perfect strike to Aidan Nelson over the middle to tie the game. Henley responded with a 5-yard touchdown run by Whitlock that finished a three and a half minute drive and gave them a 21-14 halftime lead.

While the Hornets outscored Mazama 28-7 last week after leading by a touchdown at halftime, they were never able to break this game open. On the first play after Henley turned it over on downs to end their first possession of the second half, Shaun Wilder found a hole and turned on the jets for a 68-yard touchdown. Again, though, the Hornets answered back after losing the lead, this time with a five minute drive that ended with a 3-yard touchdown run by Janney. However, a missed PAT kept the score at 27-21 and put Henley in danger of falling behind if North Bend found the end zone.

They almost did find the end zone, getting the ball inside the Hornets 15 before being pushed back by an illegal blindside block and a Matt Iversen sack. After the Bulldogs turned it over on downs, the Hornets needed just three handoffs to Whitlock to take a 34-21 lead; he scored on a 33-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter.

North Bend’s next possession lasted over six minutes and ended with a 1-yard touchdown on a Hansen sneak to make it 34-28 with 5:43 left in the game. Four plays after Wyatt Fussell recovered the Bulldogs’ onside kick attempt, Janney took a designed run 34 yards for what ended up being the game’s final touchdown.

It was only after Mark Carpenter broke up a fourth-down pass with just over 2:30 remaining that the game–and the No. 1 seed in the 4A playoffs–were safely in hand for Henley.

“I was glad we played in such an adverse game tonight,” Stork said. “It’s just going to make us more playoff ready.”

The Hornets outgained North Bend 537-369, with Logan Whitlock nearly matching the Bulldogs’ total by himself; he finished with 291 rushing yards and three touchdowns with a 28-yard reception. Whitlock also led the Henley defense with nine tackles–eight of them solo.

Joe Janney completed 5-of-12 passes for 127 yards with one touchdown and one interception while rushing for 125 yards and two touchdowns on nine attempts. Luke Chase and Matt Iversen both recorded a sack.

Henley hosts No. 16 seed Gladstone/Riverdale next weekend in the first round of the 4A playoffs.

Ashland 41, Klamath Union 0

Klamath Union (1-8, 0-6) was outgained 383-139 as the Pelicans ended the season on an eight-game losing streak. In his final high school game, Jett Johnson led Klamath Union with 45 rushing yards on nine carries and had an interception on defense. Senior quarterback Lamar Cuellar completed 10-of-20 passes for 64 yards with an interception, and junior receiver Mason Branum had two receptions for 29 yards.

Lost River 55, Crosspoint Christian 6

Lost River (8-0, 5-0) outscored Crosspoint Christian (3-4, 2-3) 36-6 in the second quarter to wrap up an undefeated regular season and the No. 1 seed in the 1A 8-player playoffs.

The Raiders outgained the Warriors 551-140 and got rushing touchdowns from four different players. Chase McAuliffe generated just under 200 yards of offense, completing 5-of-6 passes for 47 yards while rushing for 152 yards and two touchdowns on four carries (he scored on runs of 85 and 55 yards). Kayden Hartman ran 112 yards and two touchdowns (including a 59-yard score) on nine carries, Connor Guthrie put up 95 yards and a touchdown on seven carries, and Connor Dunlea had 94 yards and two touchdowns (including a 56-yard run to open the scoring) on three carries.

Crosspoint Christian’s lone points came on an 85-yard kickoff return touchdown by Chase Bacus.

As the No. 1 seed, Lost River received a bye to the 1A[8] quarterfinals Nov. 10-11, where they’ll face the winner of the first round game between No. 8 seed Perrydale and No. 9 seed Bonanza. That game is scheduled for 12 p.m. next Saturday.

Crosspoint Christian received the No. 12 seed in the 1A[8] playoffs and travels to No. 5 seed St. Paul next weekend. It’s the first playoff appearance for Crosspoint Christian in the school’s four-year history.

Bonanza 61, Chiloquin 6

Bonanza (4-5, 2-3) bookended the regular season with wins over Chiloquin (0-8, 0-5), which went winless in a full season for the first time since 2011. The Antlers received the No. 9 seed in the 1A 8-player playoffs and travel to No. 8 seed Perrydale at 12 p.m. next Saturday.

Tulelake 56, Burney 18

Tulelake (8-2, 7-1) regained some momentum after losing back-to-back games and earned the No. 1 seed in the NSCIF 8 Man playoffs. The Honkers received a bye to the semifinals, where they’ll face the winner of the first round game between No. 4 seed Big Valley and No. 5 seed Burney. That game is scheduled for 6 p.m. next Friday.
