Klamath Tribes Celebrate Recognition This Weekend

The Klamath Tribes are celebrating their regained federal recognition this weekend in Chiloquin. The Bands of the Snake Indians come together annually on the 4th weekend of August to host the Restoration Celebration Powwow Events. The events start Friday at 9 a.m.,  at the Chiloquin Elementary School,  and close Sunday with a final ceremony at noon. The Klamath Tribes’ land rights were terminated in 1954 by an act of Congress. However, in 1986, their rights were restored, with only a small portion of the former 20 million acres that were taken in 1954, much of it encompassing the current-day Fremont-Winema National Forest.
