Henley Handles Business on Homecoming. Pels Go Down 54-7

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore – The Henley Hornets 6-0 (3-0) beat the Klamath Union Pelicans 2-4 (1-3) on Friday night in front of a raucous homecoming crowd.

The Henley offense continued its mark of efficiency scoring on each of their first five drives of the game. Logan Whitlock rumbled for a score from 15 yards out to cap off the first possession of the game, then the Hornets only took one play to score on the next drive when Shaw Stork scorched the KU defense for a 21-yard run. Logan Whitlock would find the endzone two more times in the first quarter pushing the score to 28-0 after 12 minutes.

Halfway through the second frame, Luke Bennett coughed up a fumble for the Hornets, ending a streak of 11 straight scoring drives for the Hornets offense.

The Pelicans had trouble getting anything started on offense. Jett Johnson rushed for 133 yards and scored the lone touchdown of the night for the Pels. The key that unlocks the Klamath Union offense is their dynamic wide receiver, Tony Ortiz. Henley did a superb job of silencing the senior all night long. Ortiz led the state in receiving yards (561) and was third in receiving touchdowns (6) coming into the night. The Hornet’s defense held Ortiz to just one catch for 18 yards. Quarterback Lamar Cuellar completed six of 17 passes for 53 yards and tossed two picks in the loss.

Once again, Henley did most of the offensive damage on the ground as Shaw Stork led the team in rushing with 103 yards on just four carries and two touchdowns. Logan Whitlock ran for 81 yards and four scores. Stork did pass for one touchdown when he found Luke Bennett from 23 yards out. Mark Carpenter also returned a kickoff for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

With the win, the Hornets remain unbeaten and join Mazama as the only other team in the 4A classification with a goose egg in the L column. Next week the Hornets take the final road trip of the regular season when they head to Coos Bay to take on Marshfield. Watch that game for free right here.
