Citizens for Safe Schools needs your help! A local nonprofit youth mentoring organization operating in Klamath County for the past 26 years, Citizens for Safe Schools, is in dire need of new volunteer mentors for their Kids in the Middle 1:1 youth mentoring program! They are looking to recruit at least 10 new mentors before 2026- can you help them?

From September 1st through December 31st, Citizens for Safe Schools is running a recruitment contest to accommodate their growing list of kiddos who would benefit immensely from having a positive adult role model in their lives. Whoever helps them

recruit the most new mentors who follow through and are matched with a mentee by December 31st will win the GRAND PRIZE of $500!!! Second and third places will also receive some great prizes! Refer your friends, your family, your coworkers, your neighbors- anyone you think could make a good positive role model for a kiddo and could spare an hour a week to spend with them for at least a year. When they apply, just have them put your name down as the person who referred them, and Citizens will take care of the rest!

Research is overwhelmingly clear: when youth have at least one responsible adult in their life, they are significantly more likely to improve their connection to school, become advocates, and develop critical thinking and decision-making skills. Mentors are positive role models for youth. They do not replace parents or guardians; mentors guarantee youth have someone that cares about them, listens objectively, and encourages them to pursue their goals. Klamath County has an overwhelming number of youths impacted by adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), so the need for mentors in this community is strong. Mentors exemplify good character and inspire their mentee to do the same.

Students in Kids in the Middle:

  • are 2x more likely to plan for their futures
  • are 3x less likely to commit an act of violence or delinquency
  • Demonstrate better attendance, grades, and graduation rates over non-mentored peers

CFSS follows evidence-based standards for recruiting, screening, and training mentors to provide high quality programming. All mentors undergo a complete state and criminal background check, personal and/or employment reference checks, and are preferred to maintain a current driver’s license and auto insurance. A new Mentor orientation and basic training are provided and required. Kids in the Middle Mentors must be 18 or older, with preference for having a driver’s license. Citizens for Safe Schools is here to support you as much as possible through your mentoring journey!
