OSAA wrestling championships: Henley’s Clark wins second title, eight others make podium

Henley’s Dylan Clark won a state title for the second year in a row and eight other Basin wrestlers earned podium finishes at the 2024 OSAA championships.

Boys and girls tournaments for all classifications were held at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland Thursday through Saturday. Here’s a look at how things unfolded.

4A boys

Clark, who won the 120-pound title in 2023, rolled through the 126-pound bracket to finish his senior season with a 56-1 record. He pinned Cottage Grove senior Seazar Ibarra in 1:32 in the opening round, pinned Estacada freshman Leroy Mixon in 24 seconds in the quarterfinals and pinned Molalla sophomore Beau Sandberg in 1:44 in the semifinals before winning a 23-8 technical fall 4:32 into the championship match against Cascade freshman Hans Kamm.

Clark is the first Henley wrestler to win multiple state championships since Gary Jantzer won the 160-pound title in 2013 and the 170-pound title in 2015.

Junior Estefan Muneton (165), senior Cohen Redman (150), sophomore Walter Collier (144), senior Kyle Nichols (138), freshman Dillan Judkins (120) and freshman Jace Mengis (106) also competed for the Hornets, who placed 14th as a team.

The Mazama boys had the highest team finish of any Basin squad, placing eighth. Senior Tyson Van Gastel (190) pinned Cascade senior Caleb Darby in 1:27 in the opening round and pinned Marshfield junior Wyatt Petley in 1:04 in the quarterfinals before losing 4-2 in sudden victory overtime to Cascade sophomore Matthew Hinkle in the semifinals. He faced off with Abrams again in the fifth place match and pinned him in 3:06.

It would be the longest match of the tournament for Kerr, who went on to claim his third state championship.
