Henley Basketball: Hornets girls, boys start 2024 with inter-classification split

Henley basketball kicked off the new year with out-of-town trips Wednesday as the Hornets girls headed to 3A Lakeview and the Hornets boys headed to 5A Ridgeview. Here’s how each game unfolded.

Girls: Henley 56, Lakeview 46

For the second game in a row, 4A No. 1 Henley (12-0) had to grind out a win over an upset-minded 3A opponent

Lakeview (4-6) jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first 1:37 of the opening quarter and were up 16-14 heading into the second thanks in large part to three triples from Sofia Zendejas. The Honkers scored the first bucket of the second quarter to get the lead back to four, but the Hornets responded with an 8-0 run over the next 2:40 and were on top 29-26 at the half.

Henley wasn’t able to get much separation in the third quarter until Annie Campos hit a three with 4:44 to go and Senia Campos made a layup 43 seconds later to give the Hornets a 40-32 lead. They entered the fourth quarter up 44-38.

Lakeview didn’t go quietly, getting a three from Haley Havel to cut the lead to 49-45 with 3:57 left in the game. Havel had a chance to get her team within two points on a breakaway 15 seconds later, but Kennedi Modin sprinted back to contest the layup and forced a miss. The Honkers had a few more opportunities to make it a one-possession game but were only able to score one point the rest of the way.

“Credit to Lakeview,” Henley head coach Randy Denson said. “They came out shooting well. They played a good game tonight. Tough environment to play in.”

The majority of the Hornets’ points and rebounds came from Anna Harper (20 and 15) and Lily Fussell (10 and 12 with 2 steals). Annie Campos approached a triple-double, finishing with 9 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Other contributors for Henley were Senia Campos with 5 points and 6 rebounds; Kennedi Modin with 4 points; Bayli Ladner with 3 points and 3 rebounds; Jewell Northcutt with 3 points and 2 rebounds; Mya Mauch with 2 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists; and Prestyn Schade with 6 rebounds.

Kenna Stratton led Lakeview with 13 points (all in the first three quarters), followed by Haley Havel with 10 (including three triples), Nadine Mendias with 10 (all in the first three quarters), Sofia Zendejas with 9 (on three first quarter triples), Ashlynn Shullanberger with 3 and Danica Shullanberger with 1.

The Henley girls compete in the Sky-Em/Skyline Crossover at Phoenix High School Saturday. They’ll face Cottage Grove (9-4), who they beat 61-44 at the Marist Classic Dec. 9, at a time TBD. Lakeview opens Far West League play with a trip to Brookings-Harbor (4-9) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Boys: Ridgeview 63, Henley 41

Henley (7-5) fell to 0-3 against 5A opponents this season and 1-3 without both Markus McCreadie and TJ Chavez as Ridgeview (7-3) blew the game open in the second quarter and coasted from there.

Lane Frank hit a buzzer-beating three to trim the Hornets’ deficit to 14-11 at the end of the first quarter, but the Ravens went on a 7-0 run in the first two minutes of the second and built a 36-17 halftime lead.

Henley never got closer than 15 points in the second half. Ridgeview led 48-27 at the end of the third quarter and went up by as much as 26 points in the fourth.

“I thought we were ready to play and started off well,” Henley head coach Luke Hammond said. “They had too many bodies to rotate in and out, while we were fatigued in the second quarter. That had a lot to do with the run they went on.

“When you give a team like that multiple possessions by not rebounding and turning it over…it leaves you in a bad spot.”

Bryson Montag and Aiden Hayes both scored 11 points to lead Henley, with Montag adding 7 rebounds and Hayes adding 4 rebounds. Lane Frank finished with 7 points, and Owen Harper had 6 points (all in the second half) and 7 rebounds. Other contributors for the Hornets were Luke Bennett with 2 points and 6 rebounds; Peyton Lichner and Finn Charlton with 2 points each; and Chris Janney and Joe Janney with 3 rebounds each.

Brady Muilenburg led Ridgeview with 19 points (all in the first three quarters, including three triples), followed by Portland baseball commit Logan Nakamura with 13, Ryan Lee with 8, Jackson Hertel with 7, Zack Asplund with 6 (on two first half triples), Mason Zampko and Gavin Leunen with 4 each (all in the fourth quarter), and Adam Millington with 2.

Ridgeview has now matched their win total from last season in their first year under head coach Maarty Leunen, who earned All-Pac-10 honors at Oregon and was drafted by the Houston Rockets before playing 13 seasons in Europe.

The Henley boys compete in the Sky-Em/Skyline Crossover at Junction City High School Saturday. They’ll face Marshfield (8-4) at 2 p.m.
