KLAMATH FALLS, Ore – The 2nd Annual Gino’s All-Star Classic took place at Mazama High School. The best high school basketball players in the Basin played with and against each other to put on a night of community fun to benefit the Klamath and Lake Counties Food Bank. Here is how each game unfolded…
Girls Game: Team GINO’S 53, Team 960 SPORTS 49
Team 960 Sports got off to a quick start to the All-Star Game, building up an 8-0 lead in the first 3:30 of the game. 960 would stay on the gas, leading 19-9 after the first quarter. Mazama’s Saige White, Henley’s Lilly Fussel, and Bonanza’s Maggie Ackley rained down three pointers in the opening frame to help their team jump in front. Team Gino’s responded with quality defense and consistent scoring in the second quarter to bring themselves within four points at the break.
In the third quarter, it was Team Gino’s turn to hit the longball, as Crosspoint Christian’s Rilee Paulsen knocked down two triples, with Tulelake’s Josefina Mojica and Chiloquin’s Dejah Head adding one each. The game was tied 41-41 going into the last quarter. Henley’s Makayla Schroeder dictated much of the fourth quarter’s pace, gobbling up rebounds and scoring seven points in that frame. But the late hero was Mojica, who nailed a wing triple to give her team a lead with 40 seconds left. Mojica also delivered the dagger on a two-point jump shot on the next possession to seal the game for Team Gino’s.
Makayla Schroeder led all scorers with 17 points. She was helped by Rylee Paulsen with 11, Josefina Mojica and Dejah Head each with eight, Mazama’s Leah Hernandez with five, and Chiloquin’s Xavah Hescock with four. Team 960 Sports was led in scoring by Saige White and Lily Fussell, each with 10 points. Klamath Union’s Isabella Armijo scored nine, Maggie Ackley and Klamath Union’s Ariah Miller scored seven, and Crosspoint Christian’s Olivia Fenner and Tulelake’s Alejandra Ruiz-Perez each scored two.
Boys Game: Team GINO’S 60, TEAM 960 SPORTS 58
Despite playing shorthanded, the players from Team Gino’s showed incredible heart. Only five players suited up for the squad, and each of them contributed to an improbable win.
Similar to the opener, Team 960 held the early edge with a 15-11 first-quarter lead. Henley’s Ries Schmerbach hit a pair of triples in the opening quarter, and Bonanza’s Issac Noble ran the fast break to score five points. Team Gino’s responded with a few triples of their own in the second, as Crosspoint Christian’s Davis Hartwell drained two, and Chiloquin’s Dilen Black and Mazama’s Kaydon Gannett each added one.
Team Gino’s got defensive in the third quarter, only allowing the opposing All-Stars to score nine points in the frame while going on a run themselves. Bonanza’s Dominick Lamboy scored 10 points while Gannett added seven more. They carried a 47-41 lead into the fourth quarter and made late free throws when it counted most to hang on for a victory.
Davis Hartwell led Team Gino’s in scoring with 17 points. He was helped by Kaydon Gannett with 15, Dominick Lamboy and Dilen Black each with 10, and Chilquin’s Denver Bravo with six. Crosspoint Christian’s Brock Throne led Team 960 Sports with 17 points. Ries Schmerbach added 16, Mazama’s Jagger Jackson had eight, Issac Noble had seven, Tulelake’s Cooper Hall had five, and Tulelake’s Miguel Alcala and Jose Ortiz had three and two, respectively.
A Benefit for the Food Bank
Admission into the game was $1 or a canned food item, both donated to the Klamath Lake Counties Food Bank. The Food Banks also had commemorative T-Shirts for sale at the event. This year, the All-Star Game raised over $1800 and at least 220 lbs of food for the Food Bank.
