Dear KCSD community,I am writing to share some personal news with our families and community. After much thought and reflection, I have decided to retire from my role as superintendent of the Klamath County School District, effective June 30, 2026. After more than 40 years in education — including 18 years as a superintendent — this feels like the right time for me to begin the next chapter. While my wife Erin and I truly enjoyed our work, the people, and this community, our growing number of grandchildren helped guide this decision, and we felt it was important to prioritize family while the district is in a strong and stable position. Serving Klamath County School District over the past eight years has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to work alongside dedicated board members, staff, community partners, and leaders who share a commitment to educational excellence and the wellbeing of our students. Together, we navigated extraordinary challenges, including the pandemic, while continuing to move the district forward. I am proud of the progress we have made as a district. KCSD is in excellent financial condition, has successfully negotiated agreements with all bargaining groups, and continues to expand learning opportunities for students through project-based learning and Career Technical Education. We have modernized and built new facilities — including the Bonanza and Chiloquin gyms, turf fields at Mazama and Chiloquin, the Henley Construction Trades Center, and the Crater Lake Learning Center — without passing new bonds, thanks to careful stewardship of one-time federal ESSER funds. Our high school graduation rates are among the highest in the state, and recent recognition for third-grade literacy growth reflects the hard work happening in our classrooms every day. On a personal note, Erin and I have truly enjoyed living in Southern Oregon and being part of this community. We are deeply thankful to the KCSD school board and this community for welcoming our family so warmly over the years. As I approach the end of my tenure, I remain fully committed to a smooth and thoughtful transition. Over the coming months, I will work closely with the school board and district leadership to develop a comprehensive transition plan and support clear communication so staff, families, and community partners remain informed and confident throughout this process. While retirement brings mixed emotions, I leave with a deep sense of gratitude and pride. It has been an honor to serve the students, staff, families, and communities of Klamath County School District. I am optimistic about the district’s future and confident that the strong foundation we have built together will continue to support student success for years to come. Thank you for your trust, partnership, and dedication to our schools. |
