Here are the headlines for prep sports in the Klamath Basin…

Crosspoint Christian Blanks Tulelake in Interstate Showdown

The Crosspoint Christian Warriors (1-2) shut out the Tulelake Honkers (1-1) to earn their first win of the season. The Warriors used splendid defense and forced three turnovers to come away victorious in the Golden State.

Trey Johnston got the scoring started from Crosspoint with a five-yard rush in the first quarter. The Warriors added to their lead with another Johnston rushing touchdown. Johnston finished with a total of 24 rushing yards, and he also caught a pass for a score, adding 29 receiving yards. As a team, Crosspoint rumbled for 288 yards on the ground, led by Issac Root with 176 yards and three plays worth 20+ yards.

Sophomore Max Robison led the Honkers on the ground with 74 yards rushing. Ricky Garcia only completed one pass in eight attempts.

Crosspoint Christian will take the win back to Klamath Falls, where they get their home opener against Mohawk. Tulelake gets another interstate matchup this week when they visit the Bonanza Antlers.

Other Football Results…

The Henley Hornets (1-1) lost to 5A Thurston (4-1) 35-27 in Springfield. The Hornets fell behind 21-0 midway through the first half, but scored a pair of late second-quarter touchdowns. Thurston ultimately pulled away and forced a turnover on downs on the potentially game-tying drive. Joe Janney threw for 374 yards and three touchdowns and led the team in rushing yards with 41. Jeremiah Brunick paced the bunch in receiving yards with 126 and two scores. Thurston’s quarterback, Emmit Diestefano 23/30 passing for 279 yards and four touchdowns. The Hornets face Cascade Christian this week, while Thurston meets Roseburg. NOTE: This game will not affect Henley’s OSAA rating due to the game being ruled a ‘no contest’. Henley’s record will remain 1-1; however, since Thurston’s original opponent, South Eugene, was forced to forfeit, that is the only game that can count for Thurston in the ratings.

The Mazama Vikings (1-2) fell to the 3A Sisters Outlaws (2-1) 35-18. The Outlaws used two Mazama interceptions to power ahead and take the win.  Kellan Lee completed 13/28 passes for 117 yards. Brody Mahon led the team in rushing with 112 yards. The Vikings will hit the road to Yreka while Sisters visits Douglas.

The Klamath Union Pelicans (1-2) fell to the South Umpqua Lancers (3-0) 25-18. After a right opening frame, the Lancers scored 17 unanswered points in the second quarter. The Pelican defense pitched a shutout in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as the KU comeback attempt fell short. Reese Johnson completed 31/49 passes for 324 yards and three touchdowns, but threw two picks. The Pels had trouble on the ground, finishing with -10 rushing yards as a team. Tuko Saluskin returned to the lineup for the first time this season and caught 11 passes for 173 yards and two scores. Klamath Union visits Sutherlin this week, while South Umpqua visits North Valley.

The Lost River Raiders (2-1) scored a season high 54 points in their home opening win against Gold Beach (3-1). Kellen Dunlea punched in two scores in the first quarter and finished with 123 yards on the ground. Kyle Diaz carried the ball five times for 96 yards, and Conner Guthrie added 84 yards and three scores on 21 carries. Gold Beach scored all 24 of its points in the second quarter, but Lost River scored 16 in the fourth to put the game away. The Raiders’ defense forced five turnovers in the win. Lost River stays home this week to face Oakland, while Gold Beach meets Rogue River.

The Bonanza Antlers (0-3) lost 55-6 to Bandon (3-0). No stats were provided. Bonanza will host Tulelake this week, and Bandon visits Illinois Valley.

The Chiloquin Panthers (1-2) lost 12-8 to Country Christian (1-3). No stats were provided. Chiloquin was scheduled to play Yoncalla; however, the game has been canceled. Chiloquin’s next scheduled game is October 3rd @ Crosspoint Christian. Country Christian visits Riddle next Saturday.

Skyline Conference Opens League Play for Volleyball & Soccer

Skyline Conference teams will get their first dose of league action this week on the pitch and on the hardwood.

In boys’ soccer, the Henley Hornets are looking to defend a state championship, but it begins with first defending the conference title. Entering conference play, the Hornets are 3-1 and ranked #8 in the OSAA Ratings. They graduated five players from last year’s championship squad and will have to battle uphill against other Skyline juggernauts. Klamath Union is also 3-1 and ranked #3 in the OSAA Rankings. By virtue of having played more games in the non-league slate, Phoenix leads the pack with a 4-2 record. The Skyline Conference makes a case to be the toughest conference in the state, sporting four Top 10 teams this week. Here is a snapshot of the week ahead for Skyline Conference boys soccer:

9/24/25

Henley (3-1) vs Phoenix (4-2) 6:30 p.m.

9/25/25

Klamath Union (3-1) vs Hidden Valley (1-4) 6:30 p.m.

In girls’ soccer, the league is equally as tough. With three teams in the Top 10, the #5 Hornets lead the pack with a 4-0-1 record, followed by #6 Hidden Valley (4-1) and #8 Klamath Union (2-1). Last season, Henley earned the league championship behind a high-powered offense, connecting on a league-leading 43 goals. But Klamath Union earned a bid to the postseason behind some lethal defense, allowing the fewest goals (5) in the state. It’s also important not to discount the Hidden Valley Mustangs, who have been a girls’ soccer powerhouse for the better part of a decade, making it to the title game four times in that span and taking home the blue trophy in 2022. Here is a snapshot of the week ahead for Skyline Conference girls’ soccer:

Henley (4-0-1) @ Phoenix (1-5) 6:30 p.m.

In volleyball, the Henley Hornets are picking up right where they left off in 2024. Henley earned the Skyline Conference title with an 8-0 league mark last season. Klamath Union and Mazama finished behind Henley in order. After only losing one player to graduation, the Hornets have been able to retool around senior Kahlia Cage and sophomore Makayla Schroeder.  Mazama welcomes a new coach this season, Nancy Drake. The Vikings are off to a slow start with a 2-8 record, but they did finish as runners-up at the Basin Best earlier this month. Here is a snapshot of the week ahead for Skyline Conference volleyball:

Local Runners Meet at Prefontaine Memorial Race

The 44th Annual Prefontaine Memorial Race was held at Marshfield High School on September 20th. Each year in Coos Bay, racers from all over the world converge to memorialize Steve Prefontaine, a record-setting long-distance runner at Oregon before his untimely death in 1975 at age 24. This year’s event was especially notable, as it marked 50 years since the passing of Prefontaine.

The Henley Hornets boys team placed 14th. Titus Simonsen was the fastest Hornet with a time of 19:09.5. Tauranga Boys’ College from New Zealand placed first in the event with five placements in the Top 10. The Henley girls placed 11th.
