FOREST GROVE, Ore – The Henley Hornets (21-5) defeated the Marist Catholic Spartans (19-7) in the quarterfinals of the OSAA 4A Girls Basketball Playoffs.

It was a physical contest that saw Marist commit 21 fouls, and Henley 12. The foul count allowed Henley to shoot 27 free throws in the contest, knocking down 18 of them to finish 66% on the night. The Spartans finished 7/9 at the line.

Henley led 14-9 after the first quarter, but Marist adjusted and deployed a press that stifled the Hornets’ offense. Marist outscored Henley 12-3 in the second quarter to take a 21-17 lead into the locker room. Henley returned the favor in the third, holding Marist Catholic to only six points in the period. The Spartans made a run late, but missed a potential game-tying three-pointer with under 30 seconds left, sealing their fate and sending Henley to the semifinals.

Makayla Schroeder led Henley in scoring with 19 points and added nine rebounds. Prestyn Schade had nine points, seven of which came at the penalty stripe. Katelyn Shoemaker paced the Spartans with 15 points, and Ashley Powell had 12. Despite being outrebounded 33-26, the Hornets converted more second-chance points, 19-11.

With this win, the Hornets will advance to the semifinals, where they will meet the top-seeded Stayton (22-3). Henley faced Stayton earlier in the season on December 12th, where the Eagles won 65-61. The game will be broadcast by Walter Hartley on 1150 AM and 92.9 FM in the Basin.
