Klamath County Schools Shift Gears: A Greener Future with Propane Buses!

Klamath County School District is taking a giant leap towards eco-friendliness with their nearly complete transition to a fleet of propane-powered buses. After ten years of planning and effort, this shift is not just about clean air; it’s also a budget-savvy move that saves taxpayers money while keeping students safe. At last count, the district operates 82 propane buses, representing about 98% of their regular-route fleet, making it one of the largest propane school bus fleets in Oregon.

The transition was significantly aided by federal funding focused on reducing harmful diesel emissions. Transportation Supervisor Melinda Downing mentioned that the new propane buses pretty much pay for themselves, thanks to grants and reimbursements from the state. Plus, these buses are equipped with modern safety features like GPS tracking and dash cams—talk about a high-tech upgrade!

Diesel buses are notorious for their hefty repair costs, especially when they’ve seen over 200,000 miles. Switching to propane provides better reliability and dramatically lowers maintenance expenses. If only the same could be said for the snacks we find in the school vending machine! The future looks bright and cleaner as Klamath County students roll out to school in style with their shiny, eco-friendly rides.
