TEMPE, Ariz. – The Oregon State men’s basketball team overcame an 11-point deficit with under nine minutes to go to claim its first road win over Arizona State since 2007.
The Beavers battled back in the closing minutes, taking the lead on an Isaiah Sy 3-pointer with just over a minute to play. Josiah Lake II knocked down a pair of free throws to help OSU seal the victory.
Lake finished with 23 points and nine assists, going a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw stripe. Noah Amenhauser tallied 10 points on 5-for-8 shooting in his return to his home state. Jorge Diaz Graham had nine points, including a pair of big 3-pointers down the stretch.
Sy and Dez White had eight points apiece. As a team, Oregon State shot 44 percent from the floor and out-rebounded Arizona State 39-29.
Oregon State finishes nonconference play with a record of 7-6.
The Sun Devils scored the first points of the game, but the Beavers answered with a 7-0 run to take a early lead. Oregon State led 16-6 with 14 minutes remaining in the opening period. The teams traded punches from there, with the Beavers in front 27-22 at the under-8 media break.
Arizona State proceeded to tie the score at 32 late in the opening period. The Sun Devils led 40-38 at the intermission.
The Sun Devils were able to extend the advantage to double-figures with 10 minutes left in the contest. Oregon State battled back with nine unanswered points to draw within two. Sy’s 3-pointer put the Beavers up late, and Lake sealed the win with a pair of free throws.
The Beavers will open conference play on Dec. 28 when Santa Clara visits Gill Coliseum.
