Hornets Sting Seagulls in OSAA Opening Round

The Henley Hornets (7-2) defeated the Seaside Seagulls (4-6) in the first round of the OSAA On-Point Community Credit Union 4A Football State Championships 49-13 on Friday night. Joe Janney threw three touchdown passes, and the Hornets capitalized on two turnovers to capture victory and punch a ticket to the quarterfinals.

After both teams traded empty possessions, Handsome Townsend punched in a four-yard touchdown rush to give Henley a first-quarter lead, but it didn’t last. Seaside responded with what would end up being the longest drive of the game, going 11 plays and five and a half minutes, ending with a Trey McCleary three-yard touchdown carry. Henley answered with their own score five plays later when Jeremiah Brunick rumbled for a 29-yard touchdown. Henley got the ball back quickly after a Seaside interception and punched in another score from Janney, who rushed from nine yards out. The Hornets added one more score before the halftime break to lead 28-7.

Seaside forced Henley to punt on their first second-half possession, but on the second possession, Janney found Shively on a quick screen, allowing the senior receiver to make a 52-yard house call. The Seagulls found paydirt on their next drive when the quarterback, Brayden Cooley, ran in an option keeper from 30 yards out. But Henley slammed the door when Julien Rayas caught a 12-yard touchdown pass and picked off Cooley for the second time. Henley added one more score late in the third when Shively caught a quick slant pattern in the endzone.

Joe Janney completed 11/17 passes in the contest for 214 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 26 rushing yards and a score. The Hornets were led in rushing by Jeremiah Brunick, who totaled 102 yards and a score. Handsome Townsend added 13 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Shively paced the group in receiving yards with 55 and two touchdowns.

For Seaside, Cooley was 16/23 for 23 yards and two touchdowns. As a team, Seaside rushed for 263 yards.
