KLAMATH FALLS, OR – The Township Fire, which began on Sunday, September 21, in the Klamath Hills south of Klamath Falls near Lower Klamath Lake Road, remains at approximately 285 acres and is now 50% contained. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
The fire is 100% lined using a combination of handline and dozer line. In areas where rocky outcroppings prevented the use of handline, firefighters thoroughly cold-trailed the perimeter, and these areas continue to be closely monitored.
Fire crews remain engaged in securing containment lines and conducting mop-up operations. Thanks to favorable vegetation conditions, mop-up efforts are progressing quickly, allowing firefighters to deepen containment and make steady progress.
Minimal smoke is currently visible from the Township Fire. A large plume of smoke observed to the south of Klamath Falls today was not from this incident but from a separate fire burning across the California border.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, September 24, will mark the final operational shift for the South-Central Oregon Fire Management Partnership (SCOFMP) Type 3 Team. At the end of the day, management of the fire will transition back to the Oregon Department of Forestry, Klamath Unit.
No evacuation orders are in place. However, the public is strongly urged to avoid the fire area to protect both firefighters and public safety.
Fire season remains active in Klamath and Lake counties. All outdoor burning is strictly prohibited until further notice.
This will be the final update on the Township Fire unless there is a significant change in conditions.
