High school sports are upon us! With the first slate of games scheduled for today, let’s check in on teams around the Basin…
Klamath County Makes a Splash in OSAA Coaches’ Polls
A total of nine programs in Klamath County were picked in the Top 10 in their respective preseason coaches’ polls.
The Henley football program was picked #3 in the 4A Class, behind #2 Cascade and #1 Marist Catholic. Last season, the Hornets made it back to the State Championship game after winning the title in 2023. But in 2024, the Spartans of Marist Catholic toppled the Hornets. As all-state quarterback Joe Janney enters his senior season, the Hornets are poised to make another deep playoff run. In the 2A Class, Lost River was picked #4 behind Heppner, Oakland, and St. Paul. The Raiders graduated 12 seniors from last year’s quarterfinal team, but with returners like Kyle Diaz at the QB spot and Kellen Dunlea at linebacker, the Raiders look to make a run at a conference championship. Crosspoint Christian was picked #2 behind Adrian. The Warriors made the semifinal in 2024, their deepest run in school history. They open the season against #1 Adrian on September 6th.
Off the gridiron, the Henley boys soccer team is ranked #2 behind Stayton. The Hornets won the State Championship in 2024, but will have a new look in 2025. With a new head coach in Ryan Weider and only four seniors, the Hornets will need to battle hard to maintain a top spot. The Klamath Union boys soccer team landed in the 7th spot in the coaches’ poll. The Pelicans earned a trip to the quarterfinals last season. On the girls’ side, Henley and Klamath Union are together at #7 and #8, respectively. These teams battled for a league title last season, and fans should expect more of the same this fall.
Lastly, the Klamath Union cross country teams each earned spots in the preseason poll. The KU boys were picked 6th, and the Lady Pelicans were picked to be the very best team in the state of Oregon.
Tulelake is Off and Running
Things work a bit differently south of the border. Tulelake High School has already been in session for a couple of weeks, and athletics are in full swing. The Tulelake boys soccer team opened the season on August 16th and are 6-4 on the season. The Honkers won the NSCIF Championship in 2024 and will look to capture similar glory in 2025. Their next contest is August 28th against Lost River/Bonanza.
The Tulelake volleyball team began the season on August 19th and is still looking for their first win. They will look to correct a 0-5 record against Hayfork in their next matchup.
Although the Tulelake football team is still waiting for Week 1, the Honkers are looking to make another deep run in the NSCIF playoffs. The Honkers have been section runners-up each of the last two seasons. They hope that the third time can be the charm in 2025.
