On Sunday, July 13th, around 1:00 PM, three hikers were struck by a large falling tree branch while hiking near Harriette Lake on the Pacific Crest Trail. All three sustained injuries, with one hiker in more serious condition.
The hikers were able to call for help, and a U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer, along with two Klamath County Sheriff’s Deputies, responded. While enroute, the deputies contacted the Klamath County Search and Rescue (SAR) coordinator, who in turn requested helicopter assistance from Oregon Emergency Management (OEM).
A Blackhawk helicopter from the Oregon Army National Guard—already in the area after responding to a separate incident—quickly arrived on scene. The crew was able to assist all three hikers and airlifted the most seriously injured individual. The other two hikers were able to walk out on their own. The helicopter crew advised that no further law enforcement response was needed.
The Klamath County Sheriff’s Office extends sincere thanks to the Oregon Army National Guard for their rapid response and professional assistance.
