BASEBALL
Henley 2, Newport 0
A dominant outing on the mound for Mark Carpenter led the Henley Hornets (24-3) past the Newport Cubs (22-5) in the quarterfinal of the OSAA ‘On Point Community Credit Union’ Baseball State Championships.
Both teams’ offenses were quiet behind stellar starting pitching, but after escaping a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning, the Henley bats waited no longer. Beau Pyle shot a double to left field in the fifth inning, followed later by a Corbin Hamilton double, which scored Pyle. Henley added another run in the sixth when Conner Shively singled to score Carpenter.
Carpenter finished his day on the hill after 6.2 innings without allowing a run and striking out 10 batters. Hamilton picked up the save, recording the final out. Newport’s Ethan Bruns went the distance despite the loss, working 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits, two runs, and punching out two hitters.
Offensively, Hamilton was the standout, going 3-3 with an RBI and a double. Carpenter and Pyle each added doubles. Tyler Mattson recorded each of Newport’s base hits, including a double.
Newport’s season is over, but their appearance in the quarterfinals is the furthest the team has reached in the postseason since 2014. Henley will make a return to the semifinals, where they meet the team that knocked them out a season ago, the Marist Catholic Spartans. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on June 3rd with free live video coverage on mybasin.com

The Fisherman added three more runs in the fifth, and two more on an error in the sixth. As a team, Henley committed four errors leading to five unearned runs. Astoria was without error.
In the circle, Wilkin was dominant, going 7.0 innings, allowing two hits and fanning nine hitters. Rylie Hollingsworth picked up the loss for Henley, going 4.0 innings, allowing seven hits, four runs (one earned), and punching out three hitters.
