LAKEVIEW, Ore. – As the Memorial Day weekend approaches, the South Central Oregon Fire Management Partnership (SCOFMP) reminds everyone to take precautions to prevent wildfires on public lands. While recent spring storms have brought moisture, the danger of fires remain — especially as people head outdoors to camp, hike, or recreate.
“Our firefighters are preparing for the upcoming fire season, and they need your help to reduce human-caused wildfires,” said Trent Wilkie, Interagency Fire Staff Officer. “Roughly 87% of all wildfires in the U.S. are human-caused — and that means they’re preventable. As temperatures rise, we all share the responsibility of protecting our communities and natural resources. If you’re heading outdoors with friends or family this weekend, please practice fire safety.”
Here are some simple ways to enjoy a fire-safe holiday weekend:
- Protect your home: Staying home? It’s a great time to reduce wildfire risk around your property. Visit www.firewise.org for tips on creating defensible space for your home and supporting firefighter safety.
- Off-road vehicles: Make sure your vehicle is equipped with a working catalytic converter or an approved spark arrester.
- Campfires: Fully extinguish all campfires with plenty of water — stir and douse until coals are cool to the touch. Never leave a fire unattended.
- Smoking materials: Properly dispose of cigarettes and other smoking materials — never discard them on the ground or out of a car window.
- Illegal fire use: Fireworks, incendiary ammunition, and exploding targets are strictly prohibited on federal lands.
- Towing safety: If you’re towing a trailer or boat, double-check that your safety chains are secure and not dragging, which can cause sparks.
