The Henley and Klamath Union boys and girls played their final games at the 2024 Yreka Invitational Saturday. Here’s how each matchup turned out.
Orland 56, Klamath Union 46 (Girls)
Orland (2-1) never trailed in the consolation championship game, leading 17-9 after the first quarter and 30-21 at halftime.
Klamath Union (1-2) trimmed the deficit to 45-40 entering the fourth quarter, but the Trojans outscored the Pelicans 10-2 in the first 5:57 of the final period. KU committed 25 turnovers and shot 16-of-67 (24%) from the field, including 0-of-12 from 3-point range. The Pelicans outrebounded Orland 37-21.
Senior Jazmin Wilson led Klamath Union with 13 points and 3 steals; sophomore Lisette Watah had 8 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals; junior Ariah Miller had 8 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals; senior Andi Harmon had 6 points, 14 rebounds and 2 steals; senior Leah Segura had 6 points and 5 rebounds; senior Farrah Zumwalt had 4 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists; and junior Anyssa Jimenez had 1 point, 3 rebounds and 2 assists.
Klamath Union hosts Madras (0-1) at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 13.
Red Bluff 47, Klamath Union 44 (Boys)
Red Bluff (3-1) went on a 10-0 run over the first 4:28 of the fourth quarter and survived a late Klamath Union (1-2) push to capture the consolation championship.
The Spartans trailed 15-9 after the first quarter, 25-21 at halftime and 36-31 after a third quarter that featured four lead changes. They led 47-41 with 17.3 seconds left in the game, but four straight missed free throws ultimately gave the Pelicans a chance to tie the game with 3.9 seconds on the clock; senior Malcolm Lassett-Hankins made it a one-possession game with a three between Red Bluff’s trips to the line. Senior Grafton Watah nearly sent the game to overtime, but his runner from just past midcourt clanked off the rim after hitting the backboard.
Watah led Klamath Union with 22 points, 4 rebounds and 4 blocks; Lassett-Hankins had 10 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists; senior Roland Vannarath had 7 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals; junior Landon Bogatay had 5 points and 3 rebounds; and senior Bryce Petersen had 3 assists and 2 rebounds.
The Pelicans committed 32 turnovers and shot 16-of-44 (36%) from the field, including 3-of-17 (18%) from 3-point range. They also shot 9-of-18 from the free-throw line.
Klamath Union hosts Madras (2-0) at 7 p.m. Dec. 13.
Henley 41, Brookings-Harbor 38 (Boys)
Brookings-Harbor (0-3) had two chances to tie the game in the final 30 seconds but sent a pass out of bounds before missing a 3-pointer from the left corner, allowing Henley (1-2) to escape with a win in the seventh place game.
The fourth quarter began with the score tied at 31 after the Bruins went on a 10-2 run in the last 3:24 of the third. The Hornets never trailed in the period and were able to hold on despite going scoreless in the final 2:22.
Brookings-Harbor led 5-0 in the first quarter before a three from Henley senior Finn Charlton sparked an 11-3 Hornets run spanning the last 5:15 of the frame. Henley went into halftime up 20-13.
Senior Bryson Montag led the Hornets with 16 points (8 in the fourth quarter), 7 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists in his season debut; sophomore Micah Ibarra had 9 points (on three triples) and 3 rebounds; senior Nolan Mick had 5 points, 4 steals, 3 rebounds and 2 assists; sophomore Corbin Hamilton had 4 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists; Charlton had 3 points and 2 rebounds; sophomore Max Frank had 2 points and 3 rebounds; junior Jeremiah Brunick had 2 points; and junior Ries Schmerbach had 2 rebounds and 2 assists.
Ibarra was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 8.7 points and 5.7 rebounds in Henley’s three games.
For the Bruins, junior Patrick Hatch had 12 points (8 in the third quarter), senior Tanner Anderson had 9, seniors Devan Downing and Edgar Garcia both had 6, senior Talan Pryor had 3 and senior Colton Spitael had 2.
Henley travels to 5A Ashland (2-0) at 7 p.m. Dec. 13.
Henley 71, Del Norte 25 (Girls)
Henley (3-0) won the Yreka Invitational championship game in a blowout for the second year in a row, leading 20-2 after the first quarter, 42-10 at halftime and 62-18 after the third quarter.
Del Norte (3-2), which the Hornets beat 75-48 in a semifinal game last year, scored the first two points of the game. Henley scored the next 22. The Hornets had 26 offensive rebounds.
Henley put the running clock on all three of its opponents at this year’s tournament.
Junior Lily Fussell led the Hornets with 17 points (including four triples), 6 rebounds and 4 steals; senior Anna Harper had 10 points and 11 rebounds; junior Senia Campos had 10 points and 6 rebounds; freshman Makayla Schroeder had 8 points and 13 rebounds; sophomore Prestyn Schade had 6 points (on two triples), 8 assists and 4 rebounds; junior Spur Barney-Smith had 6 points (on two triples); junior Kennedi Modin had 5 points, 6 assists and 2 steals; senior Bayli Ladner had 3 points and 4 rebounds; junior Kaydence Nelson had 3 points and 2 rebounds; and junior Brooklyn Conrad had 3 points.
Fussell was named tournament MVP after averaging 13 points, 5 rebounds, 4.3 steals and 1.3 assists in Henley’s three games. Harper (15 points, 8 rebounds) and Schade (7.6 points, 4.7 assists, 3 steals, 2.3 rebounds) were named to the all-tournament team.
Junior Bliss Blackburn led the Warriors with 6 points. Seniors Brooklyn Carter and Tsinte Steinruck both had 4, junior Hailey Moerke had 3 and four players had 2: senior Makana Baugh, junior Kansas Coulson, sophomore Avery Ritter and freshman Bailey Nunez.
Henley hosts 3A Cascade Christian (0-0) at 6 p.m. Dec. 13.
