Henley Baseball: Hornets Run Win Streak to 17 Games; Collect Season Sweep of Vikings

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore – The Henley Hornets (13-0; 21-1) beat the Mazama Vikings (1-10; 2-17) by blasting six triples and securing a 17-1 win. This win marks Henley’s 17th consecutive win giving them the most overall wins in Oregon and the season sweep of Mazama.

After a scoreless first inning, Henley plated three runs in the second. Mark Carpenter hit a triple and Beau Pyle followed suit with another three-bagger to knock in the first run of the ballgame. Owen Harper added a sacrifice fly later in the inning for an RBI. The Hornets added three more runs in the third inning after another pair of back-to-back triples, including Carpenter’s second of the game, to build on the lead. The offensive prowess showed through again in the fifth inning when Henley scored nine runs to put the game out of reach officially.

Errors plagued the Vikings again on Thursday as they committed five throughout the game. These errors led to eight unearned Hornets runs. Henley only committed one error in the ballgame.

Mazama starter Jayden Justice pitched 2.0 innings allowing four hits and three earned runs. He also walked three batters and struck out two. Mazama worked by committee for the remainder, calling on four total pitchers in the game including Devyn Lobdell, Jacoby Nickerson, and Deshawn Carter.  Henley had a more straightforward day on the mound as the starter Beau Pyle pitched 4.0 innings to pick up his sixth win, allowing three hits and one unearned run. He also struck out four batters and walked one. Carpenter pitched one inning in relief and struck out all three Vikings he faced.

Offensively for Henley, Carpenter went 3-4 with two RBI, scoring three runs, and collecting seven total bases. Aiden Hayes went 3-4 with three runs and an RBI. Connor Shively was the only other Hornet with multiple hits, going 2-4 with an RBI. Beau Pyle, Max Price, Thomas Bocchi, and Luke Austin all added RBI for the Hornets. Offensively for Mazama, Carson Baeth went 1-2 and got the only RBI of the day for the Vikings. Marcos Ulla-Ford and Devyn Lobdell collected the other two hits for Mazama.

It was Senior Day for the Mazama baseball squad. The Vikings are graduating Marcos Ulloa-Ford, who will play baseball for Oregon Tech next season, and Carson Baeth, who will continue his education at Oregon State University.

Up next for Mazama is a Saturday double-header with Phoenix. On Wednesday, Henley will take a break from Skyline Conference play for a mid-week showdown with 3A Cascade Christian.
