Henley Softball: Hornets run-rule Phoenix twice in abbreviated doubleheader

A wind chill in the low 40s didn’t slow Henley (18-2, 10-0) down at all as the Hornets swept another abbreviated doubleheader Thursday, outscoring Phoenix (7-9, 4-6) 30-2 across the whole afternoon to sweep the season series with the Pirates and extend their winning streak to 14 games. Here’s how each matchup unfolded.

Game 1: Henley 16, Phoenix 1 (4 innings)

The first game started on Tuesday but was sent into a rain delay and eventually postponed with Henley leading 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning (Phoenix scored in the top of the first and the Hornets answered with two runs in the bottom half). After play resumed on Thursday, the Hornets scored four runs in the third and 10 in the fourth to end the game via run rule while Annie Campos pitched a pair of 1-2-3 innings, including striking out the side in the third.

Henley scored seven runs before recording an out in the fourth. Belle Birch scored the game-ending run on a passed ball.

Over the entire game, Gracie White was 2-for-2 with 3 RBI; Layliana Segura was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI; Jillian Vickery was 1-for-2 with 2 RBI; Haydyn Higgins was 1-for-3 with 2 RBI and 2 stolen bases; Birch was 3-for-4 with 1 RBI; Anna Harper was 2-for-4 with 1 RBI; Annie Campos was 1-for-3 with 1 RBI; and Samantha Moore was 0-for-3 with 1 RBI. Campos’ final line in the circle was 4.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K. As a team, Henley was 13-for-27 at the plate.

For Phoenix, Keelie Woodside was 0-for-2 with 1 RBI.

Game 2: Henley 14, Phoenix 1 (5 innings)

Once again, the third and fourth innings were the biggest ones for Henley; the Hornets scored five in each to claim their second run-rule win of the day.

After Phoenix scored on a two-out hit in the top of the third to cut Henley’s lead to 4-1, the Hornets found a groove in the bottom half thanks in part to multiple Pirates miscues. They scored on a dropped third strike and an error before adding runs on a sacrifice fly and two straight hits. The frame might have been even more fruitful for Henley if a mistake on the basepaths hadn’t ended it.

In the fourth, the Hornets again scored on an error and back-to-back hits before scoring their final run on a groundout. With Phoenix down to their last three outs in the top of the fifth, Annie Campos was moved from the circle to left field and keyed a game-ending double play, bending over to catch a line drive with her glove almost touching the ground before beating a retreating runner with a throw to second base.

At the plate, Campos was 3-for-4 with 4 RBI; Layliana Segura was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI; Belle Birch was 1-for-3 with 2 RBI; Samantha Moore was 1-for-2 with 1 RBI and was hit by a pitch twice (she’s now been hit 13 times this season, more than twice as many as her next closest teammate); and Jillian Vickery was 1-for-4 with 1 RBI. In the circle, Campos pitched 4.0 innings and allowed 4 hits and 1 earned run while walking 3 and striking out 6. Segura pitched the final inning and allowed 0 hits with 1 walk.

For Phoenix, Kendall Heywood was 2-for-3 with 1 RBI and Keelie Woodside was 2-for-2.

Henley faces Klamath Union (8-9, 3-7) at Conger Elementary School in a doubleheader Saturday with the first game at 12 p.m.
