Henley Baseball: Hornets Earn Two Mercy-Rule Wins Over Mazama

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore – The Henley Hornets (14-1; 6-0) defeated the Mazama Vikings (1-11; 0-4) twice in what was scheduled as a double-header. Weather derailed the second game, but here is how each contest unfolded

GAME 1: HENLEY 10, MAZAMA 0

Henley plated five runs in the bottom of the first inning, all with two outs. Owen Harper smacked a two RBI double to score Mark Carpenter and Connor Shively. Max Price then singled to knock in a run followed by Lane Frank. Then Beau Pyle blasted an RBI triple before the inning concluded.

Henley starter Corbin Hamilton quieted the Mazama order pitching five innings and only allowing one hit while striking out nine batters. Mazama’s starting pitcher Jaydon Justice worked four innings allowing 11 hits, eight earned runs, walked four, and struck out three.

The Hornets added one more run in the third inning on a Lane Frank RBI single, and another in the fourth when Carpenter wrapped a double to knock in a run. Henley scored the final three runs in the bottom of the fifth as Shively singled to left field to score the winning run.

GAME 2: HENLEY 18, MAZAMA 0

Clouds rolled over Rosser Field but the second of a double header began anyway. It wouldn’t finish on Saturday.

Henley again plated five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Connor Shively knocked in the first run after a single plus an error from the Vikings. Max Price knocked in a run and reached on an error, then Price would later score on a wild pitch.

Henley pitcher Mark Carpenter worked three innings and struck out seven batters without allowing a hit. Marcos Ulloa-Ford started the game for Mazama and only pitched the opening frame where two of the five runs scored were unearned.

Ulloa-Ford headed out of the dugout to warm up for the bottom of the second inning when hail and rain began to fall. After five minutes of a waiting, the umpires officially sent the game into a rain delay which would be picked back up Monday at 5:00 p.m.

Henley picked up right where they left off by laying on a 13 run assault in the bottom of the second inning. The Hornets belted three home runs in the inning. Beau Pyle and Luke Austin hit back-to-back jacks then Mark Carpenter hit his fifth home-run of the season.

Max Price relieved Carpenter on the mound for two innings and allowed two hits and struck out four batters.

The Vikings are back in action on Tuesday when they visit the Phoenix Pirates. The Hornets are also on the road Tuesday when they meet the Hidden Valley Mustangs.
