Henley Baseball: Hornets Win Afternoon Bout with Pelicans

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore – The Henley Hornets (11-0; 3-0) played their first home game of the Skyline Conference slate on Tuesday against cross-town rival Klamath Union (1-10; 0-3). The Hornets fell down early, but would eventually mercy-rule the Pels 11-1.

Klamath Union struck first as Brandon Jones led off the ballgame with a triple to center field. P.J. Safford knocked in the run when he hit a ground ball to third. The Henley third baseman Mark Carpenter attempted to cut down Jones trying to score, however Connor Shively didn’t secure the catch before applying the tag and committed the error to score the run. Jones’ triple and the run that would follow was all the offense Klamath Union would get.

The Hornets responded by plating three runs in the bottom of the first. Pelican’s starting pitcher, Jones, allowed three free passes via walk or hit-by-pitch, and Carpenter would walk with the bases loaded to score a run. Shively scored on a wild pitch and Aiden Hayes scored on a Max Price sac fly.

Henley added five more runs in the second inning and batted around the order. Two runs came when Hayes hit a double to left field, and he scored on a Carpenter double to center. Carpenter belted his second home run of the season in the fourth inning where Henley scored three runs. Carpenter also knocked in the winning run in the fifth inning to secure the Henley victory.

Hornets freshman Corbin Hamilton got the start on the mound and worked 4.0 innings allowing one hit and one unearned run. He also struck out three batters. Owen Harper appeared in relief for 1.0 inning and struck out one.

The Hornets will face the Pelicans again on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. and we will have coverage on mybasin.com or 104.3 FM and 960 AM.
