Basketball Game of the Week: Klamath Union sweeps second leg of Canal Bowl series

Our latest mybasin.com Game of the Week featured the second leg of the Canal Bowl series with Mazama hosting a senior night doubleheader against Klamath Union. The Vikings recognized Aurora Garcia from the girls team and Marcos Ulloa-Ford from the boys team before their respective games. Here’s how each matchup unfolded Tuesday.

Girls: Klamath Union 67, Mazama 28

Klamath Union (14-2, 5-1 Skyline Conference) played the first quarter without starting guard Dianara Peña and key rotation player Kshalee Thomas, which helped Mazama (1-19, 0-7) stay within 10-8 heading into the second.

With their full lineup back in action, the Pelicans scored the first seven points of the second quarter and built a 35-17 halftime lead. They led 57-25 at the end of the third quarter, triggering a running clock (except on free throws) in the fourth.

This was Klamath Union’s first win at Mazama since 2019 and first season sweep of the Vikings in at least 11 years.

Keely Hall led the Pelicans with 16 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals, Peña finished with 11 points, 4 assists and 3 steals, and Thomas ended up with 11 points, 2 assists and 2 steals. Other contributors for Klamath Union were Andi Harmon with 6 points and 7 rebounds; Erin Garcia with 5 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks; Farrah Zumwalt with 4 points and 2 steals; Dakota Neese with 4 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals; Bella Armijo with 4 points; Leah Segura with 2 points and 4 rebounds; Anyssa Jimenez with 2 points and 3 rebounds; and Ariah Miller with 2 points.

For Mazama, Addi Byington had 9 points, Aurora Garcia, Leah Hernandez and Shakyla Jackson each had 4, Lily Kennel had 3, and Armeda Kirkpatrick and Isabella Pena each had 2.

Both teams’ next games are at 6 p.m. Friday.  Klamath Union hosts Henley (19-1, 6-0) in an effort to move back into a tie for first place in the Skyline Conference, while Mazama concludes their season with a trip to Hidden Valley (5-17, 1-5).

Boys: Klamath Union 60, Mazama 55

In a game that was a bit more one-sided than the score might suggest, Klamath Union (7-12, 2-4 Skyline Conference) got out to a 10-1 lead in the first quarter before Mazama (4-16, 1-6) went on an 8-0 run to end the period.

Trailing 10-9 at the start of the second quarter, the Vikings took the lead inside the first minute on a turnaround jumper from the free throw line by Marcos Ulloa-Ford. It was short-lived, as the Pelicans answered with six straight points and later went on a 10-0 run over the last 3:45 of the second period to take a 28-15 lead at halftime.

Klamath Union went ahead by as much as 19 in the third quarter and entered the fourth up 48-32. The lead grew to 19 again before Mazama started a 15-2 run with just under five minutes remaining that got them within 56-50 with 49 seconds to go. The comeback effectively came to a halt after that as the Pelicans got the stops and made the free throws they needed to ice the game.

With Tuesday’s win, Klamath Union avenged their 59-57 overtime loss to Mazama in the first leg of the Canal Bowl series Jan. 25.

Tony Matheney led Klamath Union with 23 points (including 9 in the second quarter), followed by Grafton Watah with 11 (including 7 in the third quarter), DayQuan McKay with 9, Dashel Geraud with 7, Jeff Spooner with 5, Kalvin Hayes with 3 and Malcolm Lassett-Hankins with 2.

Ulloa-Ford, an Oregon Tech baseball signee, led Mazama with 23 points (including 12 in the fourth quarter), followed by Kai Hunt with 21 (including 17 in the second half), Gabe Nanni with 6, Jordan Beals with 3 and Ryan Hayden with 2.

Both teams’ next games are at 7:30 p.m. Friday.  Klamath Union hosts Henley (13-7, 5-1), while Mazama concludes their season with a trip to Hidden Valley (11-10, 3-3).
