Basketball Game of the Week: Chiloquin girls roll, Lost River boys survive in league doubleheader

Our mybasin.com Game of the Week took us to Chiloquin for their Mountain Valley League doubleheader against Lost River. Here’s how both games unfolded Monday.

Girls: Chiloquin 54, Lost River 17

Laila Weiser nearly doubled Lost River’s (6-12, 2-5 MVL) scoring total on her own, finishing with 33 points–including seven threes–as Chiloquin (14-1, 9-0) rolled to a 13th straight win.

Despite playing their fourth game in five days, the Queens started fast, jumping out to a 7-0 lead in the first 90 seconds and building a 17-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. Things only got more lopsided from there, as Chiloquin led 29-9 at halftime and 38-12 after three quarters. The Queens recorded a total of 24 steals.

Laila Weiser’s 33 points came on 13-of-18 shooting, including 7-of-11 from three. She also had 8 steals and 5 rebounds. CeCe Weiser led the rest of the team with 9 points, 8 steals, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Additionally, Makayla Jayne had 4 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists; Naima Head had 4 points and 3 rebounds; Ladyhawk Wright had 2 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals; Toleus Ochoa had 2 points and 2 assists; and Dejah Head had 3 rebounds.

Amaris Hernandez (a freshman) led Lost River with 6 points, followed by Betty Kay Overcash and Macey Thompson with 4 each and Morgan Herring with 3.

The Lost River girls travel to Rogue Valley Adventist Academy at 6 p.m. Tuesday, while the Chiloquin girls have the rest of the week off before making the return trip to Lost River at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Boys: Lost River 69, Chiloquin 58

Playing without starting forward Chase McAuliffe, Lost River (16-3, 7-1 MVL) withstood a strong challenge from an upset-minded Chiloquin (7-9, 6-4) squad.

The Raiders, who came into Monday’s game ranked No. 9 in 1A by the OSAA computer rankings, got 28 points from Tate Freeman (nearly all of them in the paint) to help counter a Splash Brothers-worthy shooting performance by Micah Hescock, who made eight threes and finished with 34 points for the 28th-ranked Panthers.

The first half was tightly contested, with Chiloquin leading 15-13 after the first quarter and 31-27 at halftime. Lost River came out of the break with intensity and took their first lead since the 5:30 mark of the opening period after a corner three from Kayden Hartman made it 33-31 with 6:40 to go in the third.

Another pivotal moment came 38 seconds later, when Panthers center Isaiah Reynolds was called for his third foul, which led to him sitting out the rest of the period. Without Reynolds, Chiloquin struggled to contain Freeman in the paint; he scored 11 of his 13 third-quarter points with Reynolds off the floor.

The Raiders threatened to run away with the game multiple times during the third, but the Panthers fought back at every instance. After Lost River took a 41-33 lead on a Freeman bucket with 4:43 on the clock, Chiloquin went on a 7-2 run over the next 1:20 to get back within 43-40. The Raiders went up 49-42 on a Freeman free throw with 43 seconds left, but the Panthers got back-to-back buckets from Hescock to make it 51-47 heading into the fourth quarter.

As the fourth went on, Chiloquin–playing their fourth game in five days–slowly ran out of gas, ending up with just 11 points in the period. Still, the Panthers never felt truly out of it until Emmett O’Brien banked in a high floater to extend Lost River’s lead to 65-53 with 2:43 remaining.

In addition to Tate Freeman’s 28 points, the Raiders got 14 from Connor Dunlea, 11 from Emmett O’Brien, and 8 each from Kayden Hartman and Beau Sanders.

In addition to Micah Hescock’s 34 points, Chiloquin got 14 from Horseman Weiser, 7 from Austin Earle, 2 from Isaiah Reynolds and 1 from Marques Hescock.

The Lost River boys travel to Rogue Valley Adventist Academy at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, while the Chiloquin boys have the rest of the week off before making the return trip to Lost River at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
