Basketball Game of the Week: Lost River girls, boys split with Tulelake

For our first mybasin.com Game of the Week, we headed to Lost River, where the Raiders hosted a home-opening doubleheader against Tulelake. Here’s how both matchups unfolded.

Girls: Tulelake 29, Lost River 26

In a game where both teams combined for 71 turnovers, the mistake that ultimately doomed Lost River came on defense.

With Tulelake up 27-26 and inbounding the ball on their own baseline with about 20 seconds remaining, the Raiders initially tried for a steal, then allowed the Honkers to pass and dribble around the frontcourt before fouling with 1.8 seconds left, leaving them with no time to create a good shot after Josefina Mojica sank both free throws.

The game was tied 5-5 at the end of the first quarter, and Lost River led 16-11 at halftime. After being held scoreless in the first half, Mojica scored 6 of Tulelake’s 12 third quarter points to give the Honkers a 23-21 lead heading into the final frame.

The Raiders missed seven free throws in the fourth quarter.

Mojica and Makenzie Perez led Tulelake with 8 points each, followed by Maritza Chavolla with 5, Kayla Frey with 4, and Mareli Hernandez and Na’Tali Idrogo with 2 each. The Honkers shot 8-of-40 from 2-point range and 2-of-4 from 3-point range.

For Lost River, Macey Thompson scored 12 points, followed by Betty Kay Overcash with 8, Eelana Gonzalez and Morgan Herring with 2 each, and Madison Holster and Eily Hawkins with 1 each. The Raiders shot 11-of-27 from 2-point range and did not attempt a 3-pointer.

The Tulelake girls travel to face Trinity (CA) in the Trinity Holiday Classic at 5 p.m. Thursday, while the Lost River girls travel to Butte Valley (CA) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Boys: Lost River 66, Tulelake 31

Playing under assistant coach Ryan Freeman, who coached both the JV and varsity teams Tuesday in the absence of Brad Johnson, Lost River trailed 17-15 after the first quarter but went on a 17-0 run over the first 6:53 of the second to take a 36-23 lead into halftime. The run was sparked in part by the Raiders switching from a zone defense to man-to-man, a look that Tulelake was never able to figure out; the Honkers scored 8 points in the entire second half.

Chase McAuliffe led Lost River with 19 points (including a dunk to open the scoring), followed by Tate Freeman with 17, Connor Dunlea with 15, Emmett O’Brien with 7, Kayden Hartman with 6 and Beau Sanders with 2. The Raiders shot 25-of-37 from 2-point range and 3-of-14 from 3-point range.

For Tulelake, Daniel Garcia scored 13 points (10 of which came in the first quarter), followed by Anthony Loza with 11, Leo Leon with 5 and Xavier Silva with 2. The Honkers shot 6-of-27 from 2-point range (2-of-20 after the first quarter) and 5-of-10 from 3-point range.

The Lost River boys travel to Butte Valley (CA) at 8 p.m. Thursday, while the Tulelake boys travel to face Trinity (CA) in the Trinity Holiday Classic at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
