OSAA 4A: No. 1 Henley 35, No. 9 Junction City 14
Henley (11-0) has used big scoring plays to run away with games for much of the season, but on Friday night the Hornets showed they didn’t need fireworks to dominate as they advanced to the state semifinals for the first time since 1990.
After exchanging long touchdowns in the first quarter, Henley used sustained drives to take control against a Junction City (8-3) team that had held its opponents to an average of 13.2 points per game during the regular season. The Hornets defense also held the Tigers to their second-lowest scoring output of the season.
Logan Whitlock scored his 70th career touchdown with a 58-yard run on the second play of Henley’s first possesssion that put the Hornets up 7-0 with 8:44 to go in the first quarter. However, Junction City quickly answered with a 55-yard touchdown run by Tylen Franks on fourth-and-1 with 5:53 remaining.
The teams traded punts before Henley embarked on a 72-yard drive that ended with a 2-yard touchdown run by Whitlock with 6:24 left in the half.
Neither team threatened again until the final minute of the half, when Henley got the ball at the Junction City 20-yard line after a bad snap on a punt went over the head of Tigers punter Kaleb Moore, who scrambled to pick up the ball only to be laid out immediately by Cohen Redman. Two plays later, Joe Janney threw a dart to Mark Carpenter for the latter’s first offensive touchdown of the season, giving Henley a 21-7 lead at halftime.
The Hornets received the second half kickoff and used the ensuing drive to take 5:45 off the clock, finishing with a 4-yard touchdown run by Whitlock that put them up 28-7. Junction City answered again on their next possession as Cooper Rothenberger hit Keivon Riley down the sideline for a 42-yard touchdown on third-and-11 with 16 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Henley was able to ice the game after Caleb Swanson-Utley recovered a Riley fumble on the Tigers 27-yard line. The Hornets worked the clock until Whitlock scored his fourth touchdown of the night on a 5-yard run with 4:12 remaining to make it 35-14.
Henley will face No. 4 seed Scappoose (10-1) in the state semifinals at 1 p.m. next Saturday. The game will be played at Willamette High School.
OSAA 4A: No. 2 Marist Catholic 48, No. 7 Mazama 27
Mazama (7-4) trailed 28-27 at halftime but was held scoreless in the second half as Marist Catholic (10-1) advanced to the state semifinals for the second time in three years. It was the Spartans’ second win over the Vikings this season; they scored two touchdowns in the final five minutes to win 33-29 when the teams met at Marist Catholic in Week 3.
Marist Catholic will face No. 3 seed Seaside (8-3) in the state semifinals at 4:30 p.m. next Saturday. The game will be played at Hillsboro Stadium.
OSAA 3A: No. 13 South Umpqua 20, No. 5 Lakeview 0 (Saturday)

OSAA 1A[8]: No. 1 Lost River 49, No. 8 Perrydale 14 (Saturday)
Playing for the first time in two weeks, Lost River (9-0) started slow but never really lost control of the game.
Perrydale’s (8-3) Erik Danka picked off Chase McAuliffe at the Pirates 40-yard line on the third play of the opening drive, but the Raiders forced a three-and-out and got the ball back at their own 45-yard line after a shanked punt. Six plays later, McAuliffe scored on a 1-yard keeper to put Lost River up 6-0.
Perrydale responded with a 62-yard scoring drive that lasted 8:43 and featured four fourth-down conversions, the last of which came on a 5-yard touchdown run by Brandon Lux to make it 6-6.
That was the only sustained drive the Pirates were able to put together. The rest of their possessions lasted seven plays or fewer, including three more three-and-outs.
The Raiders answered the Perrydale touchdown with two of their own, scoring on a 6-yard run by Connor Dunlea and a 1-yard run by McAuliffe to take an 18-6 lead into halftime.
The Pirates received the second half kickoff and drove to the Lost River 25-yard line, where, facing a fourth-and-2, they called a halfback pass for Lux. McAuliffe intercepted the ball at the 10-yard line, returned it to the 35-yard line and proceeded to lead a 10-play scoring drive. After converting a fourth-and-1 from the Perrydale 15-yard line, McAuliffe threw a short pass to Dunlea, who shook off a pair of defenders en route to a 12-yard touchdown. He then found Emmett O’Brien in the back corner of the end zone for the 2-point conversion to give the Raiders a 26-6 lead with 4:56 remaining in the third quarter.
After the teams traded three-and-outs, Perrydale started the fourth quarter facing a fourth-and-7 from their own 40-yard line. Brody Burr’s pass fell incomplete, but Lost River was flagged for pass interference, advancing the Pirates to the Raiders 45-yard line. Burr dropped back to pass again and found an open Lux for a 45-yard touchdown, then ran in the 2-point conversion to cut Lost River’s lead to 26-14 with 11:43 left in the game.
Any hope of a comeback for the Pirates was quickly dashed; the Raiders answered six plays after recovering Perrydale’s onside kick. On third-and-1 at the 4-yard line, Dunlea took a handoff outside and had the ball stripped but dove on it in the end zone. McAuliffe then ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 34-14 with 8:31 remaining.
Lost River scored 15 more points to reach the running clock margin for the fourth straight game; Dunlea had a 3-yard rushing touchdown followed by a McAuliffe run for the 2-point conversion and Kayden Hartman broke off a 31-yard touchdown run immediately after Perrydale turned it over on downs. The Raiders opted to go for one after Hartman’s touchdown, sending out 270-pound lineman Julian Perez for a successful PAT.
Lost River outgained Perrydale 408-191 while putting up 338 rushing yards. Dunlea finished with 142 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries while Hartman–who had several runs where he trucked and stiff armed multiple defenders–finished with 129 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. McAuliffe, who completed 5-of-7 passes for 70 yards with a touchdown and an interception, added 67 rushing yards and two touchdowns on seven attempts.
Defensively, Beau Sanders had three sacks and Brock Lacy and Joel DeJong each had half a sack for Lost River.
Brandon Lux generated all but 24 yards of Perrydale’s offensive output, finishing with 102 rushing yards and a touchdown on 24 carries and four receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown. Brody Burr completed 9-of-13 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown.
Lost River will face No. 5 seed St. Paul (10-1) in the state semifinals at 1 p.m. next Saturday in a rematch of the teams’ Week 1 meeting that Lost River won 40-36. The game will be played at Caldera High School.
