Lost River 45, Chiloquin 14 (Thursday)
It would be shorter to list the ways Connor Dunlea didn’t score for Lost River (6-0, 3-0) Thursday.
The Raiders superstar had a 59-yard punt return touchdown, an 8-yard interception return touchdown, a 2-yard receiving touchdown and an 18-yard passing touchdown as his team made quick work of Chiloquin (0-6, 0-3) thanks to a 32-point first quarter. He also ran in a 2-point conversion and kicked a PAT.
Dunlea’s pick six was one of three Lost River recorded in the opening frame, with the other two coming from Emmett O’Brien (32 yards) and Juan Carlos Navarro (15 yards). In the second quarter, Cy Dugan returned a fumble 36 yards for a touchdown to give the Raiders a 45-0 halftime lead.
There were a few highlights for Chiloquin, though. Lalan Wilder put the Panthers on the board with a 95-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Horseman Weiser in the fourth quarter. Micah Hescock finished with five receptions for 52 yards and Austin Earle forced a fumble that was recovered by Frank Loreman.
“Lost River is a tough matchup for anyone,” Chiloquin head coach Brandon Hoaglen said. “They’re a well-coached and very disciplined team.
“We had plays that were there. We just couldn’t connect…proud of my boys for sticking in there and putting points on the board.”
Another noteworthy stat for Lost River: Four different players took snaps at quarterback.
Dunlea completed 4-of-5 passes for 55 yards and a touchdown, Chase McAuliffe completed 3-of-3 passes for 49 yards and a touchdown, Kayden Hartman completed 4-of-5 passes for 33 yards, and Wade Petrik completed his only pass attempt for no gain.
Navarro led the Raiders with 4 receptions for 53 yards and Doug Jenkins paced the Lost River ground game with 33 yards on six carries.
Next Friday, Lost River hosts Bonanza (3-4, 1-2) while Chiloquin travels to Camas Valley (3-2, 1-2). Both games start at 7 p.m.
Henley 63, Marshfield 18
What was billed as a top-10 matchup ended up looking more like a tune-up game for Henley (7-0, 4-0).
The Hornets scored three touchdowns in a span of 3:41 around the middle of the first quarter to go up 20-0, dealing an early blow that Marshfield (3-4, 2-2), which came into the game ranked No. 9 in the OSAA computer rankings, never recovered from.
The game’s first possession saw Henley march down the field in 4:07 and score on an 8-yard run by Logan Whitlock to go up 7-0. Two plays into the Pirates’ opening drive, Wyatt Fussell took advantage of a tipped pass for his first interception of the season, setting the Hornets up in the red zone. Another touchdown run by Whitlock, this time from 1 yard out, gave Henley a 13-0 lead after the PAT was blocked. Once again, Marshfield quarterback Enoch Niblett threw an interception on the second play of the ensuing drive–this time to Bryson Montag, who returned it 21 yards for a touchdown.
The game only continued to get out of hand from there. In a span of four plays at the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second quarter, Whitlock scored another 1-yard rushing touchdown, Kyle Nichols picked off a Niblett pass and Joe Janney threw a 28-yard touchdown to Luke Bennett, who also caught the 2-point conversion.
With 11:47 remaining in the second quarter, the Hornets were up 35-0.
Whitlock added two more touchdowns before being pulled at halftime along with the rest of Henley’s starters, bringing his total to 31 on the season–a hugely impressive feat on its own, but even more so considering he’s sat out the equivalent of two full games as a result of the Hornets blowing out so many of their opponents. His final stat line Friday was 182 yards and five touchdowns on 22 carries.
Bennett caught his second touchdown of the night on a 50-yard pass from Janney to close the first-half scoring. The Hornets headed into the locker room with a 56-12 lead. A 5-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Elijah Fox to David Bouska and a kickoff return touchdown by Steel Carpenter gave Marshfield their points.
Nobody scored again until the fourth quarter, when Canyon Niblett caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Fox and Jeremiah Brunick broke off a 73-yard touchdown run.
A week after setting season highs with 185 passing yards and three touchdowns, Joe Janney finished the game having put up another solid stat line; he completed 4-of-5 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns. His older brother Chris Janney caught one of those passes for 45 yards, with the rest going to Bennett.
In addition to the interceptions from Fussell, Montag and Nichols, the Hornets defense got a sack from Matt Iversen.
Henley travels to Mazama at 7 p.m. next Friday for a de facto Special District 4 championship game that will likely decide the No. 1 seed in the 4A playoffs.
Bonanza 36, Tulelake 24
In another surprising result, Bonanza (3-4) scored more points against Tulelake (7-1) than the Honkers had allowed in their first seven games combined.
Both teams return to league play next week, with Bonanza traveling to Lost River at 7 p.m. next Friday and Tulelake traveling to Loyalton at 1 p.m. next Saturday.
Cascade Christian 35, Lakeview 7
What was shaping up to be a dream season for Lakeview (6-1) hit a serious roadblock Friday night as the Honkers likely lost their chance at a Special District 3 championship. Lakeview had allowed just 34 points in their first six games combined.
The Honkers host Phoenix (0-7) at 7 p.m. next Friday.
