Matt Bowling's Basin football recap

Here’s your one-stop shop for all of this week’s Basin football scores. This page will be updated as scores and stats come in throughout the weekend.

Henley 55, Klamath Union 8

At times Friday night, it felt like Klamath Union (1-5, 0-4) might have had an easier time trying to stop one of the trains that periodically rolled down the tracks behind the visitors stands at Modoc Field than the Henley (6-0, 3-0) offense.

The Hornets got on the board with a 35-yard touchdown run by Logan Whitlock four minutes into the game and led 42-0 in the closing seconds of the first half before Mark Carpenter returned his sixth interception of the season 69 yards for a touchdown.

Henley quarterback Joe Janney found his older brother Chris for two of the Hornets’ five second quarter touchdowns. The pair also linked up on a deep ball from midfield that set up a 6-yard Whitlock touchdown run. In the second half, Connor Shively scored his first touchdown of the season on a 21-yard pass from Trapper Cundall.

Whitlock–who, along with most of Henley’s starters, didn’t play after halftime–finished with three rushing touchdowns and a receiving touchdown while putting up 111 yards on eight carries. Joe Janney completed 8-of-11 passes for a season-high 185 yards and three touchdowns. Half of those completions were to Chris Janney, who finished with 147 yards (more than doubling his season total) and two touchdowns.

Defensively, the Hornets caused four turnovers, with all coming in the first half. Luke Bennett had two interceptions–doubling his season total–and Thomas Bocchi recovered a fumble before Carpenter’s pick-six. Bocchi and Cohen Redman each had two sacks.

“Really proud of how our guys executed the game plan,” Henley head coach Alex Stork said. “I was pleased that everybody got to get in there tonight and step up and really got to play a complete game.”

The mood among the Klamath Union coaching staff was better than might be expected after such a lopsided result.

“I’m not terribly unhappy about this game,” Klamath Union offensive coordinator Tim Pinson said. “We saw some good things, especially in our younger kids in the second half.”

One moment in particular stood out for the Pelicans.

With 6:31 remaining in the game, Lamar Cuellar threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Spooner, then ran in the two-point conversion for Klamath Union’s only points of the game. The home crowd responded as if the Pelicans had taken the lead, cheering loudly while the cart pulling the team’s touchdown bell made multiple passes in front of the stands.

“That’s the change that we’re looking for,” Pinson said. “Sure, we’re going to go through some rough patches…but things are turning, and I think the crowd is starting to see a difference there, and I think that they’re excited to see that.”

Cuellar completed 18-of-35 passes for 192 yards and a touchdown with three interceptions while rushing for 35 yards on 11 attempts. Spooner finished with 10 receptions for 111 yards and a touchdown.

Klamath Union travels to Mazama (5-1, 3-0) for the 45th Canal Bowl at 7 p.m. next Thursday. Henley hosts Marshfield (3-3, 2-1) for their final home game of the regular season at 7 p.m. next Friday.

Mazama 36, Hidden Valley 19

Hidden Valley (1-5, 1-3) used a balanced attack to give Mazama (5-1, 3-0) a bit of a scare, but the Vikings used a 24-0 run that spanned the second and third quarters to put the game out of reach for the Mustangs.

Hidden Valley, which finished with the same number of rushing and passing attempts, led 7-6 after the first quarter thanks to a 65-yard touchdown run by quarterback Austyn Klingler. Early in the second quarter, Mazama responded with a 73-yard rushing touchdown by Kristopher Baldwin to take a 14-7 lead into halftime. Baldwin scored again in the third and fourth quarter and finished with 109 yards on 11 carries.

The Vikings’ other two touchdowns came on a 79-yard run from Tyson Van Gastel in the first quarter and a 63-yard run from Seth McLane in the third quarter.

Mazama hosts Klamath Union (1-5, 0-4) for the 45th Canal Bowl at 7 p.m. next Thursday.

Perrydale 68, Chiloquin 18

Chiloquin (0-5, 0-2) scored their second-most points of the season in their non-league finale. The Panthers host Lost River (5-0, 2-0) at 7 p.m. next Thursday.

Camas Valley 64, Crosspoint Christian 14

Things went downhill quickly for Crosspoint Christian (3-2, 2-1) after a great start.

Warriors running back Chase Bacus broke off a 75-yard touchdown run on his first carry, but Camas Valley (3-2, 1-2) didn’t let them score again until Keaton Murphy ran for a 52-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter. 64 points is the most the Hornets have scored and the most the Warriors have allowed this season.

Crosspoint Christian has a bye week before traveling to Myrtle Point (5-1, 2-1) at 6 p.m. Oct. 19.

Myrtle Point 50, Bonanza 14

Bonanza (2-4, 1-2) suffered their biggest defeat of the season. The Antlers play their final non-league game at Tulelake at 6 p.m. next Friday.

Tulelake 34, Chester 8

Tulelake (7-0, 6-0) took control of the game after a scoreless first quarter to beat Chester (3-3, 3-2) for the second time this season.

Honkers quarterback Xavier Silva completed 5-of-7 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns while Danny Garcia rushed for 60 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Anthony Loza was a standout for Tulelake on both sides of the ball; he caught four passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns and recorded two interceptions, a fumble recovery and eight tackles on defense.

Adrian Garcia led the Honkers defense with five tackles for a loss, including three sacks. He finished with 14 total tackles. Erik Salazar had 12 tackles, including four for a loss, and Isaiah Perez forced two fumbles.

Tulelake takes a break from league play to host Bonanza (2-4) at 6 p.m. next Friday.

Lakeview 19, Coquille 0

Lakeview (6-0) recorded its third shutout of the season and became the first team since 2018 to blank Coquille (3-3) at home.

In the first half, Honkers quarterback Benny Alves threw 15-yard and 43-yard touchdown passes to Denver Johnson. Adrian Stubbs broke loose for a 79-yard rushing touchdown just seconds into the fourth quarter and forced a fumble to seal the game with 1:44 to go.

The Honkers travel to face Cascade Christian (6-0) at 7 p.m. next Friday for a game that will likely decide the Special District 3 champion and could also decide the No. 1 seed in the state playoffs. It will be played at Lithia & Driveway Fields in Medford.
