Basin football recap: Week 2

Here’s your one-stop shop for all of this week’s Basin football scores. This page will be updated as scores and stats come in throughout the weekend.

Henley 46, Crater 7

For the second straight week, Henley (2-0) put the running clock on their opponent thanks in part to four touchdowns from Logan Whitlock.

Crater (0-2) dug themselves into a hole quickly. Comets quarterback Ben Higginson threw an interception to Mark Carpenter on the second play of the game. On the third play of the game, Henley quarterback Joe Janney hit Luke Bennett for a 48-yard touchdown.

The next drive saw another Crater turnover lead to a Henley touchdown as Hornets defensive lineman Matt Iversen picked off a short throw from Higginson as he was trying to evade pressure. That gave Henley the ball on the Crater 32-yard line, setting up a short drive that was capped off with a 1-yard touchdown run by Whitlock.

Whitlock found the end zone again in the second quarter and twice more in the third quarter. He also forced a fumble and recovered another as the Hornets defense caused six turnovers.

“His heart and his character are what drive us,” Henley head coach Alex Stork said. “To see his heart and the joy that he plays the game with, that inspires the team as much as his rushing ability and…overall athletic ability.”

After Joe Janney found his older brother Chris for a 17-yard touchdown to give the Hornets a 40-0 lead after three quarters, Stork pulled his starters, making this the second game in row that Henley’s reserves got significant playing time. They took advantage of the opportunity; defensive back Kyle Nichols snagged the Hornets’ third interception of the night, and running back Jeremiah Brunick broke off a 53-yard touchdown as time expired.

The Hornets will now turn their focus to next Friday’s league opener against Ashland (2-0).

Mazama 57, Eagle Point 51 (3 OT)

Once again, Mazama (2-0) quarterback Tyson Van Gastel delivered in the clutch for the Vikings. After scoring the game-winning touchdown on a 3-yard run with 48 seconds left in last week’s game against Estacada (0-2), Van Gastel found himself at the Eagle Point (0-2) 6-yard line with three seconds left and his team trailing 35-27 Friday night.

He threw a touchdown to Kai Hunt, then ran in the 2-point conversion to send the game to overtime.

It would take three overtimes for Mazama to secure the win, which they did by breaking up 4th-down pass from Bryton Livingston after a 10-yard touchdown run by Kristopher Baldwin.

Despite seeing his team dig deep to grind out another win, Vikings head coach Vic Lease was far from pleased.

“Second week in a row that we were not ready to play and our opponent was,” Lease said. “We have a lot of work to do.”

Mazama finishes non-league play at Marist Catholic (1-1) next Friday.

Perrydale 58, Crosspoint Christian 48

Crosspoint Christian (1-1) only managed to stop Perrydale’s (2-0) offense once as the Pirates rushed for 452 yards. Warriors head coach Jim Johnston said his team struggled physically against Perrydale, which started seven seniors.

Still, Crosspoint Christian managed to keep the Pirates within reach for most of the game; they trailed 50-42 entering the fourth quarter and had a chance to tie the game but turned it over on downs at their own 27-yard line. Perrydale scored on the ensuing possession to effectively seal the win.

Crosspoint Christian quarterback Kody Sparks completed 16-of-24 passes for 272 yards and four touchdowns with one interception. Warriors running back Chase Bacus led the team in both rushing (74 yards and a touchdown) and receiving (126 yards and three touchdowns).

Crosspoint Christian opens league play at Chiloquin (0-2) next Thursday.

Lost River 58, Powder Valley 6

Lost River’s (2-0) Connor Dunlea ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown and the Raiders never looked back as they cruised to a win over Powder Valley (0-2) in a rematch of last year’s 1A[8] semifinal.

Dunlea also had a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown. His quarterback, Chase McAuliffe, completed 5-of-9 passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns and ran the ball twice for 86 yards and two touchdowns. Noah O’Neil led the Raiders ground game with 89 yards and a touchdown on four carries.

In garbage time, backup quarterback Kellen Dunlea (Connor’s younger brother) hit Charles Overcash for a 72-yard touchdown and Connor Guthrie ran an interception back to close out the scoring for Lost River.

The Raiders host Camas Valley (1-0) in their league opener next Friday.
