Henley girls outlasts KU in bizarre, shootout ending

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — A resumption of the game’s shootout led to five additional shots by the Henley Hornets girls soccer team, but ended with the same result they expected after the first three: a 1-0 victory over Klamath Union in the Skyline Conference.

After regulation and two overtimes ended without a goal, Henley was successful on all three of its first best-of-five shootout attempts, with Klamath Union missing two of its first four shots. The officials stopped the game, ruling it a Henley victory, but minutes later reviewed the tallies and realized a continuation was needed.

After a consultation with the coaches and a delay of about 10 minutes, the two teams lined up again at midfield with Henley attempting its fourth shot.

It was no good.

Klamath Union made its fifth and Henley was unsuccessful, forcing sudden death. Henley’s Shayla Leininger made the Hornets’ third try, ending the game.
