USDA may shut down Foster Farms plants due to salmonella

WASHINGTON — The Centers for Disease Control, which has furloughed about 70 percent of its 13,000 employees in the government shutdown, is bringing around 30 people back to work on the Salmonella outbreak traced to Foster Farms.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Agriculture warned Foster Farms this week that it intends to suspend production at three of its plants in California over the outbreak.

The agency told the company that it hasn’t followed food safety measures to prevent contamination.
