Millions spent on record fire year here in Oregon

SALEM, Ore. — The Oregon Department of Forestry has spent more than $70 million fighting major wildfires so far this summer.

That is a lot more than it usually spends to fight fires on state-protected lands.

The two largest wildfires in southern Oregon, the Big Windy and Douglas Complex fires, are responsible for nearly $60 million of that.

Some of that bill is covered by the state, and some of it will be from reimbursements by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
