Gems owner says moving team to Keizer not smart

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — Klamath Falls Gems owner Lisa Walker joined Goofing Around at Lunch on Friday, just over a week after the team parted ways with general manager Grant Wilson.

Despite the change in leadership, Walker maintains the Gems will not be leaving Klamath Falls, saying it doesn’t make good business sense even if the Salem-area was a possible destination. Walker and her husband, Jerry, own the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, a single-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.

As the search for the new general manager continues, Walker says the Gems are focused on making a push for the 2013 West Coast League playoffs. The team enters Friday’s play five games behind South Division leaders Corvallis and Bend for the division’s two postseason berths.

When asked about the ideal qualities the new general manager should have, Walker says the total picture for Gems leadership might not rest in one person.

Klamath Falls hosts Bend at 6:35 p.m. tonight at Kiger Stadium (6 p.m. – 960 the Sports Legend) before heading on a six-game road trip against Kitsap and Victoria.
