Hiighway 97 closes due to fire, reopens to two lane, escorted traffic

Chiloquin, Ore. – By using pilot cars, Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has been able to establish two-way traffic on U.S. Highway (hwy) 97 between milepost 218 and 220. ODOT hopes to have the highway fully opened sometime around 9 p.m. This part of Hwy 97 was closed for several hours due to the Military Fire.

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — A fire closed Highway 97, six miles south of the intersection of East Diamond Lake Highway earlier this afternoon.

The Military Fire, as it’s been named, is in a brushland area, and at last count was at 30 acres.

The fire is reported to be 29 miles south of Chemlut and 44 miles north of Klamath Falls.

The roadway was closed between milemarker 218 & 220, and reopened shortly after the fire started to one lane escorted traffic.

Traffic is reported to be backed up in the area in both directions as of 4:30pm today.
