Monsanto tries to dig itself out of controversy

Golden Wheat in June

WASHINGTON — Monsanto is attempting to dig itself out of the controversy, following the first lawsuit against the company by wheat farmer from Kansas.

Representatives for Monsanto say the emergence of the genetically modified strain was just an isolated occurrence and most likely resulted from an accident or deliberate mixing of seeds.

The company also says they have a test it has shared with other countries that could “fingerprint” the exact variety of wheat that carried the gene. Industry insiders predict more lawsuits are on the way.
