Track & Field: Ovgard, Estabrook champs; OIT at nationals

EUGENE, Ore. — Triad’s Gabe Ovgard won the boys 1A long jump and his teammate Sarah Estabrook took the 3,000-meter run at the OSAA Track & Field State Championships in Eugene. Ovgard’s leap of 22 feet, 6.25 inches is a new 1A state record.

For Estabrook, it was her second state championship in the event, as she beat the field by over 35 seconds. The meet continues today and tomorrow at Hayward Field.

NAIA National Championships

In Indiana, Oregon Tech sophomore Joelle Swanson placed fifth in the javelin event, throwing a season-best 143 feet, 8 inches. It was good enough for All-American status.

After day one, OIT’s Katy Choukalos is 15th in the heptathlon – the same spot Scott Minor finished in the 10,000 meters.

Paul Adams missed the finals of the 1,500 meters by eight seconds.
