Governor gives deadline for budget compromise

SALEM, Ore. — Gov. John Kitzhaber wants to pass a budget, and he’s given legislative leaders one day to make a decision.

Kitzhaber believes the talks aren’t moving forward, and have in fact stalled. So he’s giving the legislature until the end of the day today to tell him whether they’ll come to a compromise on pensions and taxes.

If not, then he’ll move to pass a budget based on existing state resources resulting in teacher layoffs and higher college tuition.
