BEND, Ore. — After counting the sage grouse near Bend, wildlife officials have decided that the species is relatively stable.

This discovery is important because the numbers determine if the sage grouse should be listed as a protected species. The decision on that classifcation is expected by 2015.

Officials count the grouse in April, when males display for the females on strutting grounds known as leks.
