House Committee letter questions Secure Rural Schools fund repayment

U.S. Capitol Congress

WASHINGTON — A letter from the House Natural Resources Committee says the Obama Administration is requesting repayment of $17.9 million in Secure Rural Schools payments.

The letter is from committee chairman Doc Hastings and 30 Members of Congress to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Office of Management and Budget Director Jeffrey Zients. It questions why the administration is retroactively subjecting the payments to the 2013 sequester when it was based on fiscal year 2012 revenues.

According to the letter, $323 million was distributed by the Department of Agriculture to 41 states.

The Members in the letter request the repayment be halted and seek a detailed explanation.
