OSAA 4A: Mazama finalizes plan for state tournament opener

CORVALLIS, Ore. — After departing for Corvallis Tuesday, the Mazama Vikings girls basketball team are ready to open play at the OSAA 4A Girls Basketball State Championships this afternoon at 1:30 p.m.

Head coach Joy Lease has family in the area, so the team avoided the host venue Gill Coliseum on Tuesday night and instead enjoyed a home-cooked meal.

Their opponent in the quarterfinal round is Brookings-Harbor, which Mazama defeated 54-28 in a very early-season game. Lease says you can’t use that game as a blueprint for the state tournament.

Mazama lost in the quarterfinal round at last year’s tournament 44-33 to Banks, while Brookings-Harbor missed the final site field all together after losing 50-18 to Philomath. Both teams have never played in the state championship final.
