OSAA 4A: Mazama departs for state tournament

OSAA Basketball

The Mazama Vikings girls basketball team was the focus of a pep assembly Tuesday morning before departing for the OSAA 4A Girls Basketball State Championships in Corvallis. The Vikings will play Brookings-Harbor on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals, needing two straight wins to play in their first-ever state title game.

The quarterfinal will be just the third game for head coach Joy Lease’s team in the last two weeks. Mazama defeated Sisters 82-44 in last Saturday’s OSAA second round game to make the final site. In that game, Lease says her team played the best they’ve played all year, especially in the second half, and says a non-conference game with Mountain View on Feb. 23 helped her team stay fresh.

Mazama lost in the quarterfinal round at last year’s tournament 44-33 to Banks. Lease says another year and another tournament appearance will benefit her team greatly.

The game can be heard courtesy of the OSAA Radio Network online. Keep checking back to MyBasin.com for video coverage from the tournament starting Wednesday.
