GRANTS PASS, Ore. — There is a free interactive map online showing geothermal energy potential.
It was posted by the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries. Using a mouse, anyone can see millions of data points nationwide showing geothermal possibilities, such as hot springs and wells.
Included in the data is the location’s name, ownership, depth, temperature, flow and other data.
Ian Warren is chief geologist for U.S. Geothermal, Inc., which put Oregon’s first commercial geothermal power plant online last November in Malheur County.
He has used the data that went into the map for years, but needed special software. He says the interactive map makes it possible for anyone to use it.
