HS Hoops: Mazama sweeps Klamath Union

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — After the Mazama Vikings girls used a dominant 12-minute stretch to win 76-33 over Klamath Union, the Mazama boys capitalized on a similar run in a 64-49 win over the Pelicans.

After outscoring KU 18-10 in the second quarter, the Mazama Vikings boys built a 42-22 early third quarter lead to take control of the game.

Klamath Union closed the gap, holding Mazama without points for six minutes to get back within 44-30, eventually trailing by five before Mazama pulled away for the win.

Mazama (9-7; 2-1 Skyline Conference) shot 39 percent from the floor and went 30 for 41 from the free throw line in the victory. Jimmy Marquit, Mazama’s lone returner with varsity experience, finished with a game-high 23 points and shot 16 for 19 from the line.

Caleb Crowell and Joey Lancaster each finished in double digits. Crowell, playing most of the game with foul trouble, scored 16 points on 4 for 7 shooting. Off the bench, Lancaster put in 10 points, getting eight from the line in 12 attempts.

Skyler Schram, playing against Klamath Union for the first time since transferring to Mazama in the offseason, had four points and seven rebounds.

Klamath Union’s Jack Bell started his first league game and scored a team-best 14 points. Hunter Bradford and Austin Depew each scored eight points. Klamath Union was 41 percent from the field.

At one time in the second half, Klamath Union was charged with seven team fouls to Mazama’s two. Both teams finished the game with ten-plus and KU had four players (Alberto Aispuro, Depew, Kyle Wolfram and Bell) foul out.

Klamath Union (5-7; 1-2) committed 22 turnovers and Mazama gave it away 13 times.

On Tuesday, the Pelicans travel to Phoenix High School (Girls-Boys Doubleheader – 5:50 p.m. – 960 the Sports Legend). Mazama plays at Hidden Valley High School.
