HS Hoops: Mazama-KU meet for girls Skyline lead

Basketball Court

It’s a battle for first place in the Skyline Conference when the Mazama and Klamath Union girls meet at Pelican Court Friday night.

Both teams are 2-0 in the league, but Mazama has been more dominant. The Vikings have won all their games against 4A opponents and are scoring over 60 points per game. Currently on a nine-game winning streak, Mazama is second in the OSAA state rankings in part because of Megan Morris, who is averaging about 12 points per game.

Head coach Joy Lease says Morris is critical if the Vikings are to work through some woes that have hampered them in years past at Pelican Court.

Klamath Union has won three straight games, beating Henley and Hidden Valley to start off the Skyline season, holding those two teams to a combined 21 percent shooting.

St. Mary’s of Medford plays at Lakeview with the winner taking first place in the 3A Southern Cascade League. Lost River (15-0) looks to stay undefeated hosting Chiloquin in both team’s league opener. Undefeated Hosanna Christian has the night off in the Mountain Valley League while Triad (4-1) hosts North Lake (1-3).

North Lake Boys Seek Second Place In The MVL

In the Mountain Valley League, the North Lake Cowboys have a chance to move into second place, playing the Triad Timberwolves. At 3-1 in league play, North Lake can move into a tie with idle Hosanna Christian with a win. Both teams are behind undefeated Rogue Valley Adventist.

Triad lost 61-56 to Hosanna Christian earlier this week. It was the first defeat for Triad since the beginning of the season. Hosanna Christian had held Triad to only 52 points during December’s Holiday Hoops Classic, but Triad still won 52-46.

In Lakeview, the Honkers host St. Mary’s of Medford. It is a battle for first place in the 3A Southern Cascade League. Lakeview beat Chiloquin 71-47 on Tuesday.

Chiloquin is at Lost River in the first 2A SCL game for both.

In the Skyline Conference, Klamath Union and Mazama are each 1-1, with KU winning its first league game on Tuesday 36-33 over Hidden Valley. Mazama followed its 58-45 win at Phoenix with an 85-61 loss at league favorite North Valley Tuesday.
