Trappers facing new restrictions

MEDFORD, Ore. — Licensed trappers in Oregon are in their first season under new restrictions designed to protect pets after a handful of dogs were caught and killed in traps in recent years.

Trappers can’t set their snares within 50 feet of any public trail or within 300 feet of any trailhead, public campground or picnic area.

Doug Nichol, president of the Oregon Trappers Association, says there had been a weakness in the old rules, and the group hopes the new ones will eliminate the problem.

Trapping for beavers, foxes and most other furbearers started Nov. 15.

Saturday marks the start of the bobcat-trapping season.
