Bill could lead to university leadership independence

A vote next month could determine the leadership fate of Oregon University System institutions.

Sen. Mark Hass of Beaverton says a Special Committee on University Governance has taken too long determining how independent governing boards would operate and asked for a final draft of legislation to be ready for approval by early October.

An Associated Press article Wednesday referenced only the University of Oregon and Portland State University as the only of the seven institutions to receive independence, so Viewing the Basin asked Oregon Institute of Technology president Dr. Chris Maples to explain what he understands about the proposed bill.

The special committee’s draft will be sent to the full Legislature, which can adopt it, change it or ignore it during the 2012 session.
