SOU squeezes out straight sets win over OIT

ASHLAND, Ore. – Oregon Tech was unable to bounce back from an opening set 30-28 loss versus arch-rival Southern Oregon University as the Owls were swept in a tightly contested match by the Raiders 3-0, (30-28, 25-16, 26-24) in Cascade Conference opening round action for both teams.

Oregon Tech fell to 7-6 overall and will take a 0-1 record in CCC play to Portland where the Owls take on Concordia University on Friday.

Oregon Tech jumped on the home team early moving out to a 9-3 lead to open the match.

SOU would quickly tie the set at 11-11 before taking a three point lead, 13-16.

Oregon Tech would battle back eventually stealing the lead back at 18-17. The Owls would take the Raiders to set-point on four occasions, but SOU would come from behind and win the extended set by a 30-28 score.

The teams would stay close throughout the first half of set 2 as the Owls trailed by just two points, 16-18, midway through. The home team, however, would close out on a 7-0 run to win the set 25-16 and move up 2-0 over Tech.

Set 3 proved more of the same as the opener as the rivals would keep it tight throughout. After an 8-8 tie, SOU would move up by a 9-13 score. The Owls would score four-straight to tie the set before taking control at 17-14. Tech would once again have chances to take a set after leading 24-21, but the Raiders closed out with a 5-0 run to take the final set 26-24.

Kristen Walters ended the evening with a match-high 13 kills to go with 7 digs, while Kara Young and Marlee Smith combined for 13 kills in the loss. Libero Marie Baumann added a match-high 18 digs with setter Kayleigh Whelchel finishing the night with a match-high 33 assists.
