2012 Preview: Klamath Union Pelicans

Klamath Union Pelicans
(2011 Record: 8-3; 5-0 Skyline Conference – Lost 36-7 to Central in Quarterfinals)

Last season, the Klamath Union Pelicans won their first outright league football championship since 1975. Starting out slowly, losing their first two games, Klamath Union didn’t lose again until the quarterfinals of the playoffs, outscoring Skyline opponents 145-20 (their game against Hidden Valley was rewritten a forfeit victory).

The Pelicans are not the favorite this season – North Valley has been mentioned by all the Klamath Falls Skyline coaches. Still, KU has about 20 seniors to go after a repeat. The entire offensive backfield is gone (All-Skyline selections Alex Stork, Alex Thomas and Chris McGahan) from last year. One of their replacements is junior Jonathon Munoz, who did get some carries last season. The linebackers remain solid, with Mitch Mirande moving from outside to middle backer, replacing Stork.

On special teams, the Pelicans won’t have the field goal range they enjoyed a year ago. Graduated kicker Kody Kuhlman is replaced by Jack Bell.

Head Coach: Tom Smith (4th Year as Klamath Union head coach)

Key returners: Jonathan Munoz (RB/LB-S), Kiel Repose (OL/DL), Mitch Mirande (TE/LB), Eric Montgomery (LB), Jack Bell (WR/DB), Tyler Butler (WR/DB), Xavier Rodriguez (OL), Zach Cardoza (OL/DL), Phillip Raffaelly (OL/DL), Isa Daibes (DE)

Key newcomers: Ben Mitchell (QB), Eric Navarro (RB), Jack Bell (PK)
